Posted via Mobile Device For anybody with an artistic bent ~ did you catch the 'sensational' news last week ? Apparentley (sp) Vincent did NOT cut off his own ear! Some academics have now stated that it was his friend and fellow artist Gauguin who did the evil deed. According to them, Gauguin (a keen fencer!) sliced off Vincent's ear with his sword after an argument over a woman, and, rather than getting his mate in trouble, Vincent told the authorities that he did it himself. And so the 'legend' began. Who know's what really happened, it's just another additional slant on a story that has made Van Gogh the worlds most recognised and most loved artist.

Must have taken you ages to type that on a phone latch haha.

Is that new news? Could have sworn when I asked my Art teacher why he cut off his own ear, she told me some people think he never and it could have been a fencing or another accident. Maybe she was in the Art clique.

Posted via Mobile Device Ages !! Ages you say! ......It was still bloody dark when i started Dan ! (wink) i'll be honest it's the first time i've heard this explanation for his inability to wear glasses' ! Yeah you could be right mate, bloody clique's everywere these day's. Haha

Van Gogh also drew a picture of his ear with the word “ictus” next to it—the Latin term in fencing to mean a hit

Think thats what I mean. One of his pictures ahd the word 'fencing' next to an ear or something

Posted via Mobile Device Yeah that's what these 'academics' are trying to say Dan. Vincent is meant to have left/given 'clues' in his work that cast doubt on the explanation for his missfortune. I dont think anyone will really nail the truth behind it 100%.
