What does ‘Woke’ actually mean ?

The term "woke" has evolved over time and has different interpretations depending on context and individual perspectives. Generally speaking, being "woke" refers to a state of heightened awareness and consciousness, especially with regard to social and political issues, particularly those related to systemic injustices such as racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination.

In recent years, the term has been popularized as a cultural phenomenon, especially on social media, and is often associated with progressive or social justice-oriented movements. Being "woke" implies a level of awareness and activism, and the term is often used to describe people who are actively engaged in efforts to challenge and dismantle systems of oppression and to promote equality and justice for marginalized communities.

However, it is worth noting that the term has also been criticised for being overused or used superficially, without necessarily reflecting a deep understanding of the underlying issues or a commitment to meaningful action.

Originally woke referred to whites who had become aware of the harmful white-centeredness of the world, at least in its Western use. Now it’s almost exclusively a perjorative phrase. But generally I agree with everything above.

Agreed.

Nothing wrong with being woke - unless you're the woke type that does it to imply intellectual superiority and virtue signalling - for example, those who get professionally offended on behalf of those who often aren't actually offended, just to demonstrate how superior of thought they are to others.

Plonkas.
