that ship on the beach, I'm amazed it doesn't fall to one side.. how is it staying up??
 
Uhmm, because that is how they sit :P. All the weight of the ship is at the bottom, so they right themselves when hit by big waves. Standard maritime construction (now when capsized and flooded, all this changes ;) )

Is a sub the same? would it lie flat if beached?
 

To beach it like that ship, yes, but to run aground, subs run that risk every day coming in and going out of port. You see, most ships don't draft all that much, maybe 20' for a deep one (excluding specific deep-draft ships and super-tankers) and the fast-attack subs draft around 28' and a boomer drafts at 36'. If my sub had run aground I would have lost my job (along with the CO, XO and navigator), but it does happen, but never to 'beaching' extent.
