Why England will never win anything.

Player Valuation: £35m
Capitalist profiteering runs from the FA all the way down to the lower leagues.

This is the model they have set themselves, not to do what is in the interest of the national game, but to make as much money as possible. Hence ridiculous friendlys half attended by fans and corporate bods who have no idea what football is.

This runs down to the attitude of the players. Make money, [Poor language removed] the game.

From merchandising tie ins, book deals, publicity, playing for england help with your "brand" which will increase revenue stream in other areas - which is probs how they think.

Does anyone want to play for their country, just for the sake of it? Not really that bothered myself, prefer the club game, but this kind of attitude is prevalent at all levels.

Look at Rooney, injured apparently for the England games. Oh look, he's back three days later for the United squad.

So fergie tells him to dive out of a few crappy internationals, no big deal. He's paying his wages after all. But its precisely why England are [Poor language removed] at the international game. The clubs have them all in their back pockets - and someone like rooney who has never stood up to anyone in his life who has waved a fat cheque at him, will go along with the ride.

Lies, money and spinning the rules is the order of the day.

i am sure they will win something- I heard their senior womens asian immigrant's heavyweight lawnbowls team is quite good.

ten times better than their Canadian equivalent but that wouldn't be hard now would it:lol:

The man who gives the lie to all this money-mongering nonsense is, of course, Wales' own Michael Owen. Who plays for England, but still finds time to win a couple of caps, every now and then, for his supposed paymasters at Newcastle.

This rubbish about capitalism is to blame would hold some water if we had dominated the sport prior to Sky getting their sticky fingers on it. It's sad to say but probably without Sky getting involved the game would have vanished such was the hooliganism situation.

I'm inclined to think that our failure to win bugger all nationally is three fold.

Firstly our youth game, and to an extent our senior game too, is still rooted in the 'get stuck in' mentality so beloved of us English. To many fans it doesn't matter if you're [Poor language removed] as long as you get stuck in. Go to your average Sunday league match and you'll see dads (probably chav mums too) bawling at their charges to get stuck in. This is why as a nation we're great at producing lung busting midfielders in the Gerrard mould, great at producing players with a bit of individual flair, and utter [Poor language removed] at producing players who can play a passing game.

Secondly we have the curiously British obsession with kiddy fiddlers. The tabloids have convinced us all that our little darlings will be abducted by any and every deviant as soon as they step foot outside the front door. Hence we're probably world champions at Pro Evo but letting the kids outside to play football in the local park (assuming that hasn't been sold off for 'social housing' of course) is far too risky.

Thirdly our players are incredibly stupid. With the honourable exception of Italy every other major football nation exports a large number of players to perform in foreign leagues, learn new skills, new cultures etc. How many of our leading players play abroad? Beckham was in Spain for three years and just about mastered buenos dias. We constantly bemoan the fact that not enough English players play in the Premier League. Why don't they try their luck abroad then? You only have to read the correspondance from these young Irish kids we've signed. With that level of education it's amazing they can survive in English society let alone a foreign one.

Surely the biggest capilitalist money merchants in sport in the world are The Americans and did you see the last (all?) olmypics, I don't remember the last time they didn't win the most golds....

Its not the problem of aiming for money or seeing money as important, its using that money to its best ability something which the FA are [Poor language removed] dire at.

Bruce is spot on, at the end of the day its the way we see football at the moment that is the problem, the people coaching today are from the 70's and 80's but it will change in time.

I always refer to this, but I think its the perfect way of doing something, if you want to be the best at something, find the people or place that does it the best and copy them.

professional sport isnt won on the track or field or in the saddle or the gym. Its won in the lab where the latest and greatest performance enhancers are concocted.

i wonder what the outcome would be if every player in every squad in the premier league were tested on the same day.

That is cynical to the extreme, not EVERY medal is won on drugs suits.

I've always thought its even simpler than that. They stink at penalty taking and penalty stopping. And every major tourney has at least one knockout match that comes down to penalties.
