Why is our midfield so poor?

Midfield isn’t poor in my opinion.

Allan, to be truly effective, needs to work in a three. Without working in a three you’re expecting him to be creative, and find key passes, either part of his game really.

Doucoure, needs a 3 to allow him to actually be the box to box midfielder we saw earlier in the season.

Gomes needs a three because he can’t tackle, or bomb forward. It’s simple, we need to play a midfield three or we get overran.

Meanwhile, we’ve got a manager who’s insistent on starting right backs in central defence, whilst we’re getting overran by Hull City.

Problem with Rafael is he just seems to hate playing a 3 which is bizarre given how much more assured we look with the extra man in midfield. He's ridiculously stubborn though.

Allan is a fantastic player, however he is just far far far too slow for this league which is a shame. The only time he has looked remotely good enough is when he's in a midfield 3 and has other people able to run for him. I also don't see a midfield 2 of Doucs and Gomes offering much either and Davies.... let's not even go there.

Exactly, can you imagine how often Reidy would have got caught out playing in a two man midfield? i suspect Benitez has gone clinically insane?

Benitez basically watched Brighton play through our midfield for 45 minutes while they created chance after chance. The problem might be partially our midfielders, but with the right system, they'd offer much more protection to the back. He needs to be more flexible with the formation and play to our strengths I'd say. As mentioned, they look much more solid with 3 in the middle.

Shame as some of the most expansive stuff we’ve played This season has been with a 3 in midfield.

Genuinely don’t believe we’ve got a bad squad at all. Benitez has made some really smart signings, but his stubbornness and reluctance is absolutely crippling us, and annulled any creativity and benefit we get from our best midfielders.

I think Everton should sign Gilmour from Chelsea . Patterson has a telepathic football connection with him. I think as a midfielder, He has everything , passing, vision, energy , tenacity. He wouldn't stretch your bank balance , think he could be the pivotal link in your midfield to create game tempo , he would jump at the chance to play with his bluenose mate Nathan too.

I like this but I’m a jock. National view aside, think Gilmour would be a good signing, he won’t get game time at Chelsea so a move would suit him.
