......the carling cup not referred to as the league cup?

The FA Cup is not the Eon cup, The premier league is not the Barclays League, so why is the League cup referred to solely as its sponsors name?

I would guess that the League Cup is the only one that sells the right to the sponser to be the name of the competition.

naming rights.

the fa cup never had a sponsor as it was said it didnt need one to promote it, when they said they would get one there was much hoohaa and it was decided it should always retain it's name and the sponsor shouldnt get any naming rights.

The league cup has always been named for the Sponsor:

The Milk Cup
The Rumbelows Cup
The Nationwide Cup
The Coca-Cola Cup
The Carling Cup

I am sure I have missed one or two in there.

Don't ever remember it being the Nationwide Cup.

It was the Littlewoods Cup for a while though. Oh and the Worthington Cup.

You made me look it up on Wiki you horror:

  • Milk Cup (1981–82 to 1985–86), sponsored by the Milk Marketing Board
  • Littlewoods Challenge Cup (1986–87 to 1989–90), sponsored by Littlewoods
  • Rumbelows Cup (1990–91 and 1991–92), sponsored by Rumbelows
  • Coca-Cola Cup (1992–93 to 1997–98), sponsored by Coca-Cola
  • Worthington Cup (1998–99 to 2002–03), sponsored by Worthington Draught bitter
  • Carling Cup (2003–04 to present), sponsored by Carling

The Rumbelows Cup was the best. I mean, come on! Who wouldn't want to say I won the European Cup, the league, the FA Cup, the Charity Shield....oh and the RUMBELOWS CUP
