This is not a strictly American thing it seems to be most common with black people (thought long about posting that, it’s not a racist comment it’s just a common trait).

Because they spell it Aluminum, whereas the British spelling is Aluminium.

USAians (I refuse to call them Americans because they're valid small part of a continent and dont own all of it) and Canadians also can't say solder. Their mouth makes a sort if "sodder" sound. Weirdos.
