I looked at the Arsenal team tonight and yet again they have a new batch of youngsters being given a valuable run in the CC cup. Wenger ideas have always pivoted on the central premise that if they are good enough then they are old enough. We have some young creative midfielders, surely with the present injury crisis in that area one of them should have at least been given a run, be encouraged to believe that the club wants to show them a future rather than read in the papers that we have no one to turn to. Years ago young players like Joe Royle, Colin Harvey, Jimmy Husband and even Brian Labone gained entry into the first team via crisis periods for the club, but not now, surely that must be a disincentive to these guys, come DM give the kids some sort of hope don't dither do the right thing.(y)

...that if they are good enough then they are old enough. We have some young creative midfielders...(y)

But are they good enough? Wenger has a good record of bringing in youngsters, even his cast offs are decent, but are they guys Moyes and co. are bringing in/through really good enough to step up? I mean i know there's only one way to find out, but is that worth the risk of an early cup exit? And consider the last player to come through really since Vaughn/Anichibe was Mark Hughes wasn't it?

the arsenal comparrison is unfair, its a one off, the cream of the african sides/teams/leagues get a year in belgium to get a passport on the fly and hey presto - worthy, hungry, quick players prepared to learn. picking up the likes of fabregas for free is also helpful.

remember also that in 4 days last season the gunners put 7 past the [Poor language removed], and the [Poor language removed] couldnt complain about being pissed up, and one game was the carling cup so was won with kids.

Wenger is such a talented manager that half the time I dont think its the individuals in his team being so good but the team he puts out plays his type of football and thats the decisive part.

Moyes isnt as good as Wenger in putting out a good balanced attacking team so I dont think a team full of kids would be a wise move in our situation.

But it would be good to at least give a few of the youngsters a chance.

I would like to see one or two youthies, perhaps Jutkiewicz and Kissock/Vidarrson either way I think that having Yakubu and AJ upfront could be a good thing against poorer opposition get them to work on their partnership hopefully it'll kick start one of them into gear.

I think its an ideal game for AJ to get a goal or two, so I would pick him, but it would be interesting to give Jutkiewicz a run out too. Surely a young midfielder should be tried too, they cant be worse than the first team at the moment.

I am not advising that we do as Arsenal do and pick an entire team of kids, of course not but, as Sim says surely there must be room for the better ones. Put yourself in the juniors dressing room, they must be saying 'come on I can do as well as X player is doing but we stand no chance of being picked becuase the boss has no faith in any of us, not even the best', that attitude will start if this continues. Players soon realise if they can't break into a successful side, its obvious but when the team isn't performing that is entirely different matter that will bring discontent, and can you blame them:(

See the VDM thread for my opinion on this. But for those who can't be arsed this is what I propose.

Premiership clubs must play 7 u20's in the first eleven. Reasons:

1) Senior players are saved from injury
2) Youth players are given vital experience
3) Lower league clubs also have a chance of decent cup runs.

Arsenal have had it right for years now, and I think every Premiership club should do the same. How annoying will it be if Lescott picks up an injury?

I followed you across from the VDM thread to reply - its an interesting idea and I think the underlying sentiment behind your idea is good. Few opinions though:

1. for at least half the premiership teams (maybe most of those not in european comps) its the only real chance of silverware - its up to the board/manager whether they treat the league cup as a priority or not, and hence rest players or not.
2. Wouldn't it devalue the victory for a non-premiership team if there were official restriction on the team selection for prem teams

I also said in a different thread that in this match we may not see it happen just because the training staff want the bulk of the first team squad to play themselves out of the current rut - but once a good FA/UEFA run has hopefully been guaranteed i would expect it to happen later in the season.

Lets go along with Ghost's suggestion. Who would the magnificent seven be?

Ruddy
? ? ? Boyle
? ? ? Vidarsson
Lukas Agard

It's perhaps worth remembering that exposure to senior football won't turn rubbish into great. Osman has had plenty of exposure and hasn't progressed into a world beater. The likes of Jeffers and Cadamarteri started off well and went downhill thereafter.

I suspect it is slightly more complicated than it seems.

We wouldnt be too badly off anyway - Vaughan and Anichebe are stilll under 20 arent they.

Perm any 5 you like after that - I havent seen much of the young lads

Baxter is getting talked up a lot, also add Kissock to your list after some pre-season appearances

I`d love to see a couple of the younger lads getting a game tonight.I`d like to see Kissock given a go but then again as posted elsewhere, with our current midfield shortage why was Da Silva allowed to go back out on loan again?
Any news on Artetas` injury.
