Interesting read.

I know Liverpool flog gear by the tonnage, but I'm wondering how much those figures reflect what's happeneing right now given they encompass the period 2004-09. Liverpool are joint fourth there with Arsenal, Chelsea and Bayern Munich. All the teams on a par with them and outperforming them have been way more successful since LFC's last high point of 2005. I'm not saying they're not a successful 'brand', but status isn't an unchanging quality. Their onfield failures will reflect sales if this keeps up for another few seasons.

Real Madrid claim to be the bestsellers. They reckon they pay for signings like Beckham and to a large extent Ronaldo on shirt sales alone. I suspect it's just a smoke screen to cover up the fact that they are bankrolled by high powered politicos

TX Bill posted an article on another thread about football finanaces which pretty much said the same thing. Sold their training ground to the government for a lot more than its value as a way to help pay off debt etc. Worse than the Torries them Spanish lot!

I could see Liverpool, but Chelsea?
The whole world of football and especially football merchandise has changed since the advent of the prem and the current format of the CL. Fans here in Spain certainly know the names of Chelsea more than Everton. I asked a fan one time who he thought had won more league titles in England. Chelsea, Spurs, Newcastle or Everton. He assumed the other 3 were ahead of the blues in the honours list. Purely based on television exposure they'd benefitted from moreso than us.
It's what we've said on here lots of times. A whole generation of part-time armchair fans* think football started in 1992-93. Thanks to Murdoch, Blatter, Nike and Adidas
You see a fair amount of Chelsea shirts over here.

*I'm an armchair fan but I am a full-time pro

It just shows the fickleness of fans. I'm sure Barca will be higher the Real now after winning the Champions League.
Having worked around Knowsley in places such as St Helens, Whiston where its very much the dividing line between Liverpool and Manchester I've always noticed many people are either Manchester United, Liverpool or Everton fans. In five years i'd never seen a Man City fan, now you see a couple of shirts each week.
If anyone plays the Premier League fantasy football you can see which fans have the best average support score and how many there are.
At the end of the season about 2 years ago I saw that City had about 30,000 registered fans, we had about 70,000 along with Villa and Newcastle. Spurs had about 100,000 and the four "big clubs" much higher.
Today City has 56,000, Newcastle 54,000, Everton 49,000 and Villa 47,000. Those 26,000 people have just emerged because City have money.

This is a great blog for the business/marketing side of football, also goes into the kit sales etc: karllusbec.wordpress.com/
