in memoriam - 1965-2024
Listening to 5live, and they are banging on about the money paid to clubs for overseas tours/merchandise, etc etc, and the RS wanting individual tv rights overseas.

Reminded me of when I lived in Cheltenham, and went to their home games. Non League at the time. Their manager was Paul Barren, ex goalie coach for EFC, and Colin Harvey sent a team down for a pre season. Binman went in goal for Cheltenham, honestly, and a pretty much full team turned out. Cottee scored for EFC in a 1-0 win, then after the match, the full squad stayed behind in the supporters club, chatting to fans, donated tons of shirts and stuff for an auction, to raise £5000, which enabled Cheltenham to re-roof a small stand, that the roof had been blown off a few weeks earlier. The new roof meant Cheltenham could play in Div 4 if they got promoted, as the ground would be ok.

Would like to think the same would happen now, but listening to 5live, not so sure.

Sad.

we would still do such things.

The shoite however are another kettle of fish, at the derby the other week they wouldn't even let their own mascot in the dressing room, they won't sign stuff at Melwood and drive past kids going in then again coming out. The father of the mascot pointed out the vast difference in the way we treat everyone compared to how they do, saying that's were 'the peoples club' tag is accurate.

I know, didnt mean to suggest we wouldnt do that sort of thing now, in fact I would be pretty confident of loads of examples being posted. And the point made by the dad of the mascot is spot on, and kind of underlines my point. A lot of " good stuff" gets done by players and clubs, but there is an arrogance developing that I dont like at the top end of the PL, underlined by that tw#t from RS. BTW, what ever anyone thinks of Rooney, the amount of time and money that he dedicates to Alderhay hospital is terrific, and usually totally unreported. Once a blue, etc.

This may be complete bollocks, but didnt we help Chester out about 15 years ago by paying way over the odds for one of their youth team?
