We need a minimum of 4 CBs for a season
Godfrey ,Mina , Keane Holgate
However CBs play is as much about partnerships as it is about individual qualities
Hence Sanchez /Mina is a much stronger combination than both alone would suggest
Godfrey is similar in qualities to Sanchez so he would seem to be a natural partner to Mina
He is also the only CB with genuine pace ,so this along with his other qualities make him a guaranteed starter next season after a proper pre season under Ancelotti

It's because Branthwaite's presence most likely means that we're eventually moving somebody. At their respective ages it's most likely going to be one of the two, and the long term starting XI probably involves Godfrey at CB because of his pace.

Branthwaite could, of course, fail to develop and it could be him that moves on.

Am I the only one who wouldn't touch the defence apart from a RB, those lads in defence are good, get them a midfield and that might help a bit rather than a new defender which really isn't needed.
