Who has your favourite voices, singing or spoken?

Mine would be Joe Cocker and Janice Joplin. They are not the best technically, sometimes you have to just imagine the note Joe Cocker is trying to sing, and listening to Janice Joplin sometimes feels like intruding on her therapy. When I listen to them they have so much emotion in their voices they can stall make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Who are your favourites ?

Aretha Franklin, Otis Reading, Al Green, Elvis Costello, Marvin Gaye, Paul Young, Paul McCartney (Beatles version), Ella Fitzgerald, Joni Mitchell, Joe Cocker, Stevie Wonder, Lowell George, Rod Stewart, Stevie Marriott, Minnie Ripperton, Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Paul Weller, Ray Charles, Bjork, George Michael and Hanna Montana.

A young Robert Plant, the unmistakable Lennon & McCartney, Paul Rogers of Free & Bad Company, Blues singer Koko Taylor, John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Stevie Winwood, Stevie Nicks and Ray La Montagne to name but a few. Got me thinking this post has, theres just too many to list. Best voice for stories has to be Richard Burton. That one was easy.

Currently refamiliarisng meself with Tim Buckley's stuff - Happy Sad; Greetings From L.A.; Sefronia. Wonderful voice.

Agreed. And his son had a cracking voice too.

Elliott Smith had a voice of pure honesty and emotion that made any lyric sound fresh and without cliche.

Spoken: Lance Henrikson, the artificial lifeform in Aliens and Frank Black in Millenium. A voice like broken glass and honey. And a face like a car crash.
