Methodist church club - that catholic thing is a myth....

The story I always remember was that Everton started signing Catholic players and St. Domngo's church didn't like it so we had to change our name.

Could well be one of those bollox stories your Grandad tells ya though.

We'd be the sassiest team in the league if our name was still St. Domingo's.

We'd play in all pink and have a mascot called Domingo the Flamingo.

We started in a Methodist church as a cricket team & then in the winter formed a football team - a Derby Game was V Bootle who they used their Cricket ground combo for Cricket & Football ... as we grew we had many ground problems as the crowds in Stanley park got bigger & bigger - enter John Holding another ground was found, but was a mud heap, so he moved us to Anfield - we still had church connections then - not catholic ones the area may have been Catholic, but our team were not a Catholic team it was a myth ....

The club's roots loosely lie with a Methodist New Connexion congregation who had a chapel on the corner of Breckfield Road North and St. Domingo Vale in Everton, Liverpool. Initially formed as St. Domingo FC, named after the chapel, the football team was renamed Everton in 1879 after the district of Everton.
