80s and 00-10s are chalk and cheese

if you took most of the great 80s players and put them in the prem now they would be bewildered and blowing after 20 minutes

I mean its an interesting view. When you say great players of the 80s are we talking Maradona, Zico, Van Basten, Platini? Or lesser players.

Psycho was a bit before my time, so I can only really go for Baines. My favourite Everton player of recent times.

Where has the notion he couldnt defend came from? I cant remember him being at fault for many goals.

I loved Bainsey, quality baller and he was doing the stuff the rs whoppers of Territorial army-army and smack rat Robertson apparently invented, long before they knew it, but it’s Paddy Van all day.

He was vastly underrated as a footballer, as @Eggs has already said, and could do a job anywhere across the back four.

He was rapid, a great defender, could play much more than he’s given credit for and probably still is a top shagger = winner.

Simply put- Van Den Hauwe helped put everton on the map, was part of the best side in our history and one of the best in the world (at the time).

Never saw him, but watched countless videos, seen stats etc...

Baines, love that he's a blue, that he loves the club, that he commites 10 years to us, and probably deserved more. At times, media snobbery made him be overlooked for so much. Worked amazing with Pienaar and was extremely dependable... but Van Den Hauwe legacy sees him win for me.

Baines within top 5 everton players of all time to not win a trophy for me.

Baines was technically superior and a star in the side . Paddy was a great defender but lacked the impact Leighton made .
Paddy really did have great taste in women though .

Can’t wait to see what GoT has got for us today . Maybe a cheeky Pole or an American with was playing when Tito’s country existed . Love a ‘tache me .

probably meaning the great domestic players

the above would still be knackered very quickly in a match of todays fitness and intensity

Baines for me, no doubting PVDH was a great player but this team is crying out for as much creativity as we can get. Dropping in a prime Baines would have seen us turn more of these draws into wins, IMO.

That's all about eras - In Pat Vans day he played amongst players with the same level - e.g. just like Dixie Dean he played in a different era but all the surrounding players had the same levels of the game same conditions etc etc - but not many managed to score at the rate he did at the age of 23 years old he surpassed a league record 200 goals in the league -

Yes the game was different, but it was the same level playing field for all player in that era - they tried to stop Dixie from scoring by man marking a stopper on him - he asked the ref if he could leave the field - where are you going asked the stopper - I'm going for a pee if you want to hold it for me - when he came back out on to the pitch his stopper was on the touchline waiting for him :D -

So really any fullback in any era is to be judged on how they played in their era - it was the same conditions of play ..... Dixie Dean scored for fun in that era so he must have been so special .....

Pat was before my time so hard for me to answer the question.

But Baines is easily in my top 3 favourite ever Everton players, so I am always going to go for LB in a discussion about Everton full backs.
