Electric car advice

I won't be buying one until I have to get one which probably won't be in my life time.
I appreciate they may be better for the planet but as someone who can't be arsed stopping for petrol having to charge a car almost daily is too much of a fap .
Well I guess that’s one thing you can do whilst you wait for it to charge. Don’t think mine would charge in three seconds though

I’ve hit a new low when I’m asking for advice on here but a real man isn’t afraid to ask for help.

I’m looking at getting a new car, the thing that’s putting me off going electric is the charging, availability of chargers, the time it takes and potential resale value.

I’m probably going to go 2nd hand which worries me with resale, I live around Lark Lane and see people scrambling to get their car charging on lampposts. Can anyone give any advice or their experience of what it’s actually like to live with one. I don’t know anyone who has one to ask.
Dont buy an electric car.

They are a walking radiation timebomb, if you ask me, and are no better than any other car for the planet.

Don't do it, especially second hand, I've tested them for years and they're rubbish, numerous drive train and electrical faults and the longevity is pathetic, that and charging time and UK infrastructure for electric vehicles is awful. Get a diesel with euro 6 or 7 emissions would be my advice.

It’s most the infrastructure and worry about a battery needing to be replaced that’s putting me off them (especially 2nd hand). I’ll probably go petrol or diesel but seeing as I don’t know anyone that lives with one day to day I thought I’d see what people who live with them actually thought. I used to play 5 aside with a lad that had one and he’d have to park it at the Tesco about a mile away then walk to footy to do his weekly charge. That was a while back though and I’m not sure if the infrastructure has come on from 4 odd years ago

No mate no drive. Car would be parked on the street, I work in Manchester twice a week but park up at a train station. I work from home the rest of the week. I don’t really have any long drives I have to do
You can hang a wire out your window etc. to your car, however you then have to ensure the cable is clearly marked and isn't a trip hazard as you'd be liable.

You're also going to have a pretty low kW per hour this way, so a charger on the wall would be best, but you're still having the same issue. 7p per kW is great though!

The ones in lamp post (Shell Ubitricity) are about 5kW per hour, and it'll cost you close to 50p per kW hour on a tariff - this isn't particularly quick nor cheap.

Some of the lamp post ones though are up to £1 per kW if it's a PAYG. Near to Lark Lane, you do have the ones in McDonalds, yet they are 87p per kW hour.

Get a classic in good condition,no tax,no MOT (but still give it the once over every year) pick the right model and there's a good chance you'll make a profit come time to sell it on.

Good info that mate thank you. The only charging stations I know by mine are the ones at McDonalds and Lidl on Park Road (probably because I don’t actively look for them). I did notice somebody with a wire out of their window charging their car the other day when I was walking the dog and it was the first time I’ve seen it. For now I don’t think the things that worry me have really been changed by what you and everyone has said so I think I’ll avoid

I don’t have any advice on what you’ve asked but I’d recommend looking at a good hybrid, which provides a lot of the same benefit with less headache.

My wife has a mild hybrid but uses it like it's a full electric car. To combat this I've installed solar panels on the house, now I'm rewiring the garage so I can easily charge the car at night without cables dangling out of windows. All in all that car has cost ME loads, she likes not refuelling often though. 🙃

If you don't have a drive to park the car on then I wouldn't personally consider having an electric car. Running a cable out to the street and the potential hazard and claims makes it far too much hassle and charging away from home means you don't get the cost savings.

When there are enough charging places buy one !

We've just bought a Ford hybrid. Apparently they use VW electrics which, as these things go, are pretty good.

So far, we are pretty pleased with it. The car is largely only used for short journeys so the 30 mile electric range is fine. Longer journeys are good too, they just use more petrol when the electric runs out (obvs.). It recharges itself to an extent during a journey so it does reduce petrol use.

It is a faff having to plug it in after every use but it does plug into a normal 13 amp socket. You kind of get used to plugging it in, a bit like your phone and the likes.

No idea what the long term maintenance will be like ...
What happens when the battery fails ?
