£40m Bid Made For Sigurdsson

Would be interesting to have been a fly on the wall during his contract extension negotiations last season. Swansea were tipped for relegation, francesco guidolin was favourite for the sack but he signed a new contract (despite us being apparently interested).

Having had a cracking Euros and the future of Swansea looking bleak I can't believe that he signed a new contract extension without some sort of assurance that if a top club came in for him the following season, the club would't stand in his way. Looking back, his agent was a bit stupid not to insist on a buy out clause.

I get the feeling the last summer, the board/ manager were well aware of the difficult season they were going to have and knew that keeping Sigurdsson was vital to them retaining their Premier League status. However, as a sweeter, I presume that Sigurdsson would have been told at the time he signed the contract that the following summer, the club would't block a move to a bigger club.

By all accounts, we did a similar think with Lukaku, stay another year, if we don't get top 4 you can move on. Liverpool will probably try and do a similar thing with Coutinho, allowing to move to Barca next summer.

There's some merit in this argument, as clearly Sigurdsson isn't happy, refusing to board the coach to the airport. Would be nice to hear his side of the story but it was reported a few days ago that Sigurdsson felt that Swansea were acting unreasonably in their valuation of him.

Also a few reports that there is a split at Swansea, with Jenkins and Clement eager for the deal to go through soon, whilst Kaplan and Levein (new American owners) are the ones hard balling. Could be that Jenkins made the assurance and now the Americans are going back on it.

Who knows were the truth lies, but I can't believe that he blindly signed a contract extension with them last summer without the subject potential future moves coming into the discussion. He would have either been given an assurance that the club would't block a move to a big club or that the American owners would invest to make the Swans a top 10 club. Since the Americans bought them, they are in exactly same position 12 months on, probably favourites for relegation with no real investment into the team.

Had he known that after keeping Swansea in the league the club would be asking for £50 million for him, I doubt he would have signed the extension.

Risk is growing that this might not happen now.. Skybet have him at 1.53 to go to Everton. Best price on him staying at Swansea is 3.1
