2024/25 Jordan Pickford

With new owners, and money to spend at last, I think we should be looking at better than Pickford.

Gordon Banks, perhaps. Pat Jennings. Neville Southall. Peter Shilton. Getting one of those in would be a real show of ambition.
And, ironically, Pickford has actually been a better England keeper than either Banks or Shilton.

Southall and Pickford also very similar not only in being great keepers, but also being "nutters"...
The best keepers are I think.

Southall was very calm on the pitch. Pickford is very hyped. esp if he makes a great save. Southall was like what the fuss. Just get on with the game. Southall claimed everthing in the box aswell. He had velcro for hands. He dropped nothing. Pickford isnt in the same league for that.
imo they're two very different keepers bar great saves.
Good keeper pickford but he's not in southalls league. Not a chance.

Very few goalkeepers in football history are.

In England, in the 1980s, I would say only Shilton, Clemence, and Jennings could compare. Schmeichel in the 1990s. Has there been anybody this century to approach these levels consistently? The players I have mentioned here lasted for well over a decade in each case, sometimes two.

Seaman was a good keeper, but not in this class. Cech was never the same after that bad head injury. I don't really rate anybody else - and I love goalies, being an amateur one at Mickey Mouse level in my younger days.

Internationally, in the 1980s, the best keepers in my book were Rinat Dasaev - probably the only keeper of the 1980s who truly rivalled Southall for me - Harald Schumacher and Jean-Marie Pfaff. All were great in different ways. Dino Zoff was past his best by then, and Sepp Maier had retired.

From the 1990s, the highly eccentric Thomas Ravelli was memorable - and far better than his eccentricity suggested, Andreas Köpke was excellent for a few brief years, and Andoni Zubizarreta was always formidable, but none were in Big Nev's league. I liked Peruzzi and Pagliuca, too. Very good. Oliver Kahn was incredible for a while in the 2000s, but his private life got in the way of his career, so his time at the top at international level was brief enough. Gianluigi Buffon was the best since. Iker Casillas had a very good decade, too. Manuel Neuer was fantastic up to winning the World Cup. I think he dropped off a cliff then. I like Jan Oblak of the current crop, but I think he lacks the huge personality to win the shootouts that his teams consistently lose. Too quiet for my liking, not enough ego.

Anyway, this rambling treatise was brought to you in association with nostalgia. Bottom line? I don't think many in history compare to our Nev.

Like comparing Maradona and Messi. Different eras. Can't we just accept that both are very good at their craft.

Ah. Must've misinterpreted it. My bad.

The bit about different leagues probably the part that I got muddled about.

Fair do's. I could have probably worded it different.
Southall looked like he'd just got out of bed. Appearence wise and his demeanour.
Pickford is completely opposite. Though i do think he's calmed down a bit.

Seriously underrated outside of the 4 walls of goodison. See so much tripe saying he is only good for England Lad has been a class keeper for club and country for the last 4 years rarely makes a mistake these days. Put Pickford in the Moyes teams of the mid/late 2000s we finish top four more then once and probably win a trophy or two
