40 years ago (about the time I started taking an interest in football) there were the likes of Gary Stevens, Kevin Radcliffe, Peter Reid, Kevin Sheedy, Graham Sharp, Adrian Heath, might not all have been glamorous foreign signings. But they would leave it all out on the pitch for the team. And they cared. This lot aren't fit to shine their boots.

He solidified us for a while, some ups and downs. I don’t revere that period to be honest. Of course it’s much better than now which says a lot about where we are.

The most we got was a cup final loss and being tagged as “best of the rest” and “punching above our weight” which for me isn’t something to be hugely fond of.

There was some soulless away performances in that time too, that knife to a gun fight mentality, something I never felt good about and was a little belittling.

To think the players in our side today are getting almost 70 times the salary back then.

We've certainly not had any managers since Moyes who can bring virtual unknowns in and turn them in to top flight players who were basically idolised by the fans. All on a budget too "Cash strapped Everton " was the pundits favourite line.

I couldn't see Moyse going near the Bernards, Schnederlins,Klassens and Gomes's of this earth.

We had some poor spells under him and at times lacked some decent players, but what we did have he made sure fought to the end.

I was at a family member funeral that day and remember it well.

Driving home from SFX church listening to it on the radio.

Then, 4 days later an electric Goodison v Fulham and Unsie smashing one in after about 5 minutes.

Moyes brought us back to life, oh I wish there was even an ounce of that spirit among this collection of half arsed wage thieves.

Moyes position would’ve been as untenable from the start as Benitez’s was. Similarly because of what he once said. What could he have said at a press conference if asked to comment on speculation about one of our better players being linked with a bigger club - after what he said about Baines and Fellaini soon after leaving. Burned his bridges, we may be sh*te but the ambition is bigger than him.
