The times quoted Stephen Hawking as saying he had placed a £100 bet that the experiment would not yield a Higgs Boson particle (which is kinda the whole point of the machine).

that is a great quote.

that was a good post, chris. covered all the bases.

Where did the monkey get the bike from and where was he riding?

If I tell you that the information would be too much exhilaration for you to handle and you would self combust and release a very pungent smell. And my mum told me I can't.

The Big Bang is a theory. Creationism has more evidence.

I really hope you're just fishing :P

there are only anecdotal accounts of the creation myth (not a theory, as it is not open to scientific examination), none of these accounts were penned by a direct witness.

there is an awful lot of evidence for the Big Bang (or similar rapid expansion event) from the cosmic background radiation mapping undertaken by WMAP to the plain as day fact that the universe is still expanding to this day, hence the demonstrable shifting of radiated frequencies dependent on the distance of their source from the observer.

Now, there's nothing to say that all of the above wasn't set in motion by some higher power*, if that's what people would prefer to believe, but the rapid expansion of the Universe, along with the evolution of life on this planet are both facts, the mechanisms behind them are theories.

* my guess is if you could hear what happened just before the big bang you'd hear "and now, we'll set the collider up so that the paths of the protons cross and what we'd expect to see.. OH SHI" :P

Typical don't believe a word of what those crap journalists and media hpye types come out with.

BOOM well it didn't.

A lot of bullshit is spread about by ignorant people just like those green peace peolpe damaging that coal fired generating plant in Kent. It will be less pollutting than current coal stations and gas and oil fired ones.

Will they be happy when the lights go out do you think.

And that is precisely what the big hitters in theology are saying today. It sounds a bit ad-hoc to me, but there was no room for them to turn. The evidence was just too compelling for them to ignore. But then they try and make it their own by claiming that it was a "finely tuned" big band. A tad larger or smaller and then life could NEVER have developed.

I prefer Multiverse theory myself which kind of wipes the floor with the above.

i still don't quite understand the significance of this whole thing

so they're looking for the higgs boson particle right? it sounds as though they're already relatively sure it exists, so what's the point in trying this hard to find it, lets say we get an awesome clear [Poor language removed] picture of it or whatever, what will that solve?

mind you i'm not a scientist in any way so there's a good chance i'm missing the point of all of this. but i just don't get it, it seems either that the scientists are relatively sure of what will happen in the reaction, which means the reaction isn't a huge deal right, if there's little chance for discovery? and if we do find something new, well, this trying to recreate conditions billionths of a second after the big bang, couldn't they be unpredictable and couldn't whatever results cause a really bad problem really quickly, hawking radiation or not.

i'm sure my ignorance just made several scientists cry, but i'd appreciate any information about this.

The fact about evolution is that difference between species is a result of genetic information being taken away, eg - for a wolf to evolve in to a poodle genetic information was taken away. Nothing has ever been added by evolution. How then does a pile of gas exploding evolve in to something as complex as a human being? I just can't imagine how that would happen.
