I'd always read that there was a team called Accrington Stanley in the original league in 1888-89.

I'd always read that there was a team called Accrington Stanley in the original league in 1888-89.

Accrington FC one of the 12 founder members of the league were formed in 1878. They lasted four seasons in the Football League. They eventually folded after they left the league in 1896.

Accrington Stanley were formed in 1891 and joined the Football League in 1921 until their demise in the early 60's.

The current phoenix club the new Stanley were formed in 1968 and worked their way into the Football League through the non league pyramid system
