5 Substitutions

In all seriousness it should be good news for a lot of our younger players as well as the ones who get injured more often

This will lead to a definite change in the game, in the sense that impact subs will play more of a role
Our bench at the minute is as bad as I can remember and we always make the same subs. This is not a good change for us right now.

Why are you complaining mate ? We can bring on our two reserve goalkeepers....it's all fair, Klopp has got his own way again

Alternative view is we could sign some not crap players and bring them on instead. Every PL team has a 25 man squad, the relative quality of the squad is a much wider issue than just how many subs you can use IMO. Anybody outside that 25 man squad is a youth player, not a bad thing if they get more minutes.

Yes we could and I'll revise my view if we do, till then I still think it suits the bigger and better squads.

I think we will slowly begin to see 'American Football' style attack vrs defence games because of theis law change, which again isnt great for the integrity or competition or just general enjoyment of the sport.

Guarantee someone next season goes to the Etihad or Anfield with 6 defenders, (4 centre backs & 2 full backs) 3 big athletic centre midfielders and a fast guy just ahead of them!
Turn it into a defensive excersise game, where they aren't even bothered about attempting to score a goal or create a chance, and then on a set pre defined time they decide to make 4 or 5 substitutions if they are 1 down or even drawing to attempt to change the game for the last 10 minutes. It will be like american football again, having a defensive line up, then when it is time to attack, the attacking line up come on!

You can picture Allardyce or Mourinho doing it! Hell, we pretty much almost did that at Anfield last year under Ancelotti

Just pandering to the big clubs yet again.

Imagine it next season - Things aren't going you way Pep/Shippmann? - I know, you can bring on 300 million quids worth of attackers against newly promoted Fulham who have 3 yts players to come on - it just further queers an already queered pitch.

Now, If they made it part of a rule where the two additional subs have to be from the academy/u23s or you can't make the changes and can only have 3 subs max, then I'm all for it.

It would make all teams play the younger players more regularly, especially the club's who have signed loads of young players who can't get near the 1st team.

Spot on this.

Crazy the amount of rule changes to football in the Premier league over the last few seasons. Even changing rules during the season. Feels like up until 5 years ago there was barely any rule changes in the previous 20 years. European competitions going the same way too.

Onus is on us to make it a good change for us

All this whinging is ridiculous

A new rule as been brought in that we can 100% benefit from if we're smart and actually build the team with it in mind

If Lampard isn't getting some of the u23's up to train with the senior team so he can possibly give them some minutes off the bench with this new rule in place then it's a dereliction of duty IMO

It allows a manager to make a full on tactical switch by bringing on an entire half team of outfield players. Sound when you’re City and can afford to start KDB, Gundogan and Mahrez on the bench.

Not so much when you’re bringing on *checks notes Lonergran and some kid called Price.

As people have pointed out, would be good to see it utilised to allow the young lads more minutes. But in such a cut-throat league, I’m hopeful, more than expectant.

You act like we also can't afford to bring on millions of pounds worth of players off the bench. We can - the fact they are mostly absolute garbage is unfortunately the case 5-subs or not.

Why bring Liverpool into this? They haven't spent a penny. All their signings were made through selling Coutinho....

Most leagues in Europe did it last season, and I don’t see any real evidence that it befitted the “big“ clubs then. It’s also the case that “smaller“ clubs tend to make more subs anyway, so that surely helps them?
Next seasons league programme is utterly mad, it starts and ends pretty normally yet there is a 6 week break for a World Cup. So next season it suits everyone to do this.
I’d reassess before the 23-24 season myself

I understand the argument that it benefits bigger teams with better squads but after our injury ravaged season I’d have thought additional available subs might have helped us on that front.

Long story short: NEA.
