Player Valuation: £50m
The Forest ruling will be very interesting. Personally like you I think if Profit & Sustainability actually means what it says it’s ridiculous clubs should have to sell for less profit just to meet the P&S deadline. That defeats the larger purpose. If they had a proper penalty calculation method, Forest would be sorted in 3 minutes flat. Admitting guilt, deliberately breaching in order to maximise profit on a player sale after the close of the assessment period, which will help their compliance in future periods and give them more to reinvest the in the squad this year.
Deliberate and knowing breach with clear and resultant sporting and financial advantage. Even though what they did is definitely the right decision to improve their profitability and sustainability.
Though they planted the seed in a press release before they charge was even official that they’d had a terribly terribly tricky time adapting to accounting for PL activity, promotion bonuses etc.
Don’t mind that they tried to spend their way to PL competitiveness; it was the way everyone that questioned them was slapped down and told it’s all completely fine and above board that was very annoying.
BUT the rules say the deadline is the deadline and we did sell Richy in a hurry to meet it, and got no credit for it. So it would be inconsistent with their inflexible approach to our mitigations to let them count Johnson towards last year’s PSR.
The other key thing to watch with the decision is if they do allow the Johnson sale to mitigate last year’s accounts there has to also be an adjustment to this season’s to balance it. They surely can’t use it to allow them off with last season’s breach AND let them count it on this season’s accounts.
