Aaron Ramsay Incident

Hearts go out tonight to Aaron Ramsey and his family, horrible thing to happen to anyone, and I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

We all joke on here about this and that, and generally it's banter - but then something happens and it may not be directly connected with you or your friends, but something makes you stop and think.

Of course tragic events such as Tsunami's and Earthquakes are terrible, and I am not diluting there impact on society, but in my sport that I love, Football, what happened today for Ramsey is terrible.

Arsenal are obviously kicking up a stink about being targeted for rough treatment, and maybe that is true. They do pass around and showboat, and for sides like Stoke who have very little technical ability, all they can do is kick the other player to unsettle them. I also don't really recall Arsenal players recently actually fouling players over the top.

They are generally all about the beautiful game, but then you take away the steel from other clubs and you lose the masculinity of the game and the passion of making that crunching tackle to get the fans going.

So my question is, what this just an unfortunate coincidence (bear in mind it's 3 times in 5 years for Arsenal), or are the ballplayers being picked off by the less intelligent footballer? and if so, what should be done, what can be done?

Disclaimer - I know Shawcross was traumatised by the incident, but it was deemed bad enough to be a red card, so not going to feel sorry for him just yet. I am also not just referring to this incident in general, but all the bad tackles that have occurred over the past few seasons.

Good post. Apparently the clip is now on youtube so everyone can see for themselves, but from the skysports camera shown live it was a 50/50. I don't think they're being targeted, i honestly believe lesser skilled players mistime/misjudge tackles due to the speed in which the arsenal players can move their feet! I know they've had 3 horror's in 5 years but other teams have too. Bar Vieira, and Keane's career ending tackle on Haaland as some sick form of revenge, i believe today's pro's respect eachother and don't deliberately set out to seriously hurt/maim/injure eachother

I would say that intelligent footballers / ballplayers have never been more protected from more physical opponents than they are now, nor have they ever been so amply rewarded or had such advanced medical support available to them.

There'll always be this sort of thing. It's still here even though we have the most regulated game ever. It's a contact sport. To answer your question: anyone who breaks another players leg should serve a season long suspension. You cant prove intent with any certainty, of course, but that'd just be tough [Poor language removed] on the offending player.

If a player does it to Gerrard, on the other hand, all bets are off.

Sometimes you just have to take out the smarmy little gits on the field.

I'm sure Shawcross didn't mean it, but I'll refer to Starship Troopers for this one

Sir, I don't understand. What goods' a knife in a nuke fight? All you have to do is press a button, sir.

SARGENT ZIM
Put your hand on that wall trooper. PUT YOUR HAND ON THAT WALL!
[Zim throws a knife and hits Ace's hand pinning it to the wall]

The enemy can not press a button... if you have disabled his hand. Medic!

I've just seen the clip on YouTube and it doesn't look malicious really. A full bloody tackle that was mis-timed if anything. He wasn't diving in or going two footed.

Just one of those things unfortunately. David Busst had a similar injury back in the 90's. We need to draw a distinction between incidents like this though and acts of thuggery such as Nolans tackle on Anichebe for instance.

Thankfully the video doesn't really show the state of his injury, but the picture on the BBC site leaves little to the imagination. Hope he makes a full recovery.

I don't recall anything like this over here, nor in Spain nor Italy.

Players should start thinking the risk of throwing mad tackles.

The roughness of the game is not about sticking your boot bottom to your opponent.

But it is a part of the game.

We all sit there and complain like MAD when the ref blows for a ridiculous foul that never was.

You take the biff out of the game, you lose the spirit of the game.

MORE BIFF SAYS I.

It's a good point, if put in a slightly gutter way.

Can someone file this in the '101 Reasons to Dismiss Davek's comments on anything'.

Seriously mate, either your joking or warped. Or both.
