Academy wins again - now 5 wins and a draw and (according to interviews on EFCTV) most of them a year younger than usual opposition, as the older lads are playing for the reserves.

Anyone taken the time to go and have a look lately? Latest team: must admit I only really knew about José Baxter, Kieren Agard and Austrian before now.

# Stubhaug
# Stewart
# McCardle
# McCarten
# Barnett
# Codling
# Krenn (note Austrian (y) )
# O'Kane
# Redmond
# Baxter
# Agard

I've been impressed by the effort the club has been making to identify and recruit promising young players over the last year or so.

anyone seen much of these kids? do we have more reasons to be cheerful?

Well word on the street is that the kid Baxter is as good as Rooney was at that age. He is also playing a level above his age group, which is what Rooney did. Just got to try and keep hold of this one.

Agard too is scoring goals in the reserves and he also scored in some pre-season friendlies with some of the first team.

Looks promising.

What gets me is that this kid Baxter is banging them in for the academy yet he doesn't even feature on the OS squad list for the academy. Not suprising given the monkeys who work on the site.

I would say so. Look at our last reserves game:

* Turner
* Irving
* Boyle
* Sinnott
* Dennehy
* Harpur
* Morrison
* Vidarsson
* Kissock
* Jutkiewicz
* Agard

Not one "old pro" in there. And Rodwell (coming back from injury) and Spencer on the subs bench. So, we're getting a good long look at around 15 young lads to see if they can hack it.

Agard was being talked up on the OS interviews as being a strong player (although he was compared to Ossie!). For me it will be interesting to see if either Irving or Boyle make the breakthrough.

Midfield would be the place where it would be nice to see a breakthough ASAP after the last few games... Vidarsson seems to have been on the fringe for a while now. Will he make the leap? Saw Kissock on TV in pre-season and he seemed to be nimble but tiny. Great scouse name and barnet from what i remember though. Probably a it much to expect an academy lad to be able to step in and run our midfield, but is there anyone who could do a job in the centre or the wing given our current problems?

as for jutkiewicz - what a name to type can we think of a nickame a la preki

Well I seem to remember a certain Billy Kenny stepping into the fray in a merseyside derby and he ran a midfield that was already laced with talent (from Liverpool, not Everton - we were [Poor language removed] then too).

We've had a few like that that have promised more than they've delivered. Tony Grant was another who had bags of talent but never fulfilled his promise.

Not sure I agree about Tony Grant. I saw him as lightweight and not really up for the cause. To be a great midfielder at any club you need to come into the side and perform like your the best midfielder on the pitch at that time. Billy Kenny did that, spraying balls left right and centre, really dominated the midfield.

At the moment we have Osman who vanishes for 80% of a game. Carsley who points backwards and passes the same way, Neville jumps on people's backs. Apart from Arteta (who I have yet to see have an outstanding game this season), the only player who I have seen who looks like he can take the game by the scruff is Jagielka (and now perhaps Gravesen), but Jags looks like the player who could well be a potential captain for the club.

The startling thing for me against the Russians was the gaping hole in the centre of midfield, which I think basically boils down to players not wanting to take control of the game, Osman was too far forward or wide, and Neville and Carsley were too deep. So no wonder Hibbert was resorting to big punts. Now ok Moyes has to take responsibility and I am sure he is aware of that fact and would be drumming it into the players.

Will they listen? Altruistic midfielders, waiting for someone else to take control of the game. Its no wonder the likes of Keane, Scholes, Vieira and now Fabregas are held in such high esteem. Its there ability to say, right I'm taking control of this game, I am going to be the most influential player on the pitch. They may not always have the ability, Roy Keane never did, but he had the passion and the belief that he was the best player.

Yep, well maybe Kissock is that man. We seem to have some great youngsters coming through so maybe a little patience, sprinkled with the odd superstar.

But do we want to buy a team and then miss out on the talent under our noses?

His size is often used against him but it was often said that Scholes was too small when he was young so it's certainly possible.

Well size means diddly squat, its about ability and the desire to succeed. Roy Keane isn't big, Papa Diop is big, Keane is ten times the player Papa is because of his desire and drive.

I think if Osman had better decision making he would be 5 times the player he is and his lack of weight would not be such a factor, as it is he does skillful stuff quickly followed by an astray pass.

Trust me its 50% ability, 40% desire, 10% build. Well thats what I think anyway. I don't want a Vinny Jones, I want a Keane or Vieira.
