Acoustic / Stripped down

Time to lay down your 4 favourite acoustic / stripped down songs. Not looking for what you think are the best - just your 4 personal faves.

These type of tracks bring out the best in performance artists as there’s no place to hide. Looking for tone, tempo, melody and lyrics - it’s all laid bare for the audience.

Dave Matthews exempted? Feel like you could just do 4 or his. But there are a lot of lovely acoustic led songs out there, although it feels a bit of a lost art (and somewhat dated… and white, but I digress).

#1 Street Spirit

I’ll name 3 more later and max 1 of them will be DMB

A fellow Evertonian, poor sod. Good mate of mine who writes some great stuff but earns his crust doing (mainly) covers in pubs.

A bit of Katie Muela. Criminally underatted. Back touring now after a bit of a break.

Finally, Neil Young covering Jolene. (Only messing, it's Dolly slowed down from 45 to 33) I love it.

To me the acoustic guitar means folk/Americana that defines so much of American music. I'm not sure it's always so simple, although that is a lovely style, but acoustic is so often layered and complex so maybe I'll go off script some here. I'm no musician nor historian of music so if you have any complaints then turn the dial. Also not submitting only 4, so whatever.

1. Mr Record Man by Willie Nelson. Sometimes all you need for a great song is a sanger and a geetar. Won't you play a song for me? I'll skip the greats like Dylan and the Beatles, even that one perfect Don MacLean song. This one from Willie will do for me.

So much of Willie is great, but also listen to Uncloudy Day by Willie. This one is folksy Americana and borrows from gospel. Nice stuff. You can hear similar sounds in Counting Crows doing Mr Jones. This style never really failed but flourished again in the 80s and 90s and you should also listen to Toad the Wet Sprocket and almost any Dave Matthews, but especially Two Step. *nb, Two Step goes back to religious roots wrapped into American folk, but maybe from a different angle.

2. Drive by REM. Automatic for the People is one of the great albums and you should give it a listen today again or for the first time. I'm not sure who started the trend going back to acoustic rock in the 90's, but MTV's unplugged, especially Nirvana's performance, and albums like Automatic for the People put this style back in front for a moment while rock 'n' roll shifted from hair to flannel to ennui. Give this one a spin, but maybe jump directly into the album instead.

3. During this moment in the 90's when acoustic rock was the (quiet) rage, Goo Goo Dolls released a few nice songs. I don't even like them but Name is worth a few minutes of your time.

Acoustic has been popular before and will be popular again in American rock. Son2 reminded me of the great Hotel California, you might have heard this before. Not sure this counts as acoustic but that's the style I guess. And maybe this bridges rock and Americana, but in the end I suppose all music is referential.

4. Radiohead are my favorite and they don't do much acoustic only even though Thom does play acoustic a lot. Famously Fake Plastic Trees is acoustic led, but my favorite is Street Spirit (which is both electric and acoustic in most versions.)

Realizing I never linked Two Step, which is maybe the best song in this list
