Brings all home to me again. My cousin was killed there 2 years ago. I put the very same post on another forum....couldn't believe some people are still saying it is a just war etc......

Effing madness , it will be our own Vietnam......no end , no point

Sorry , but it is too close to me.

Dave

I do not know your name

I do not know your name, but I know you died
I do not know from where you came, but I know you died

Your uniform, branch of service, it matters not to me
Whether Volunteer or Conscript, or how it came to be
That politicians failures, or some power-mad ambition
Brought you too soon to your death, in the name of any nation

You saw, you felt, you knew full well, as friend and foe were taken
By bloody death, that your life too, was forfeit and forsaken
Yet on you went and fought and died, in your close and private hell
For Mate or Pal or Regiment and memories never to tell

It was for each other, through shot and shell, the madness you endured
Side by side, through wound and pain, and comradeship assured
No family ties, or bloodline link, could match that bond of friend
Who shared the horror and kept on going, at last until the end

We cannot know, we were not there, it's beyond our comprehension
To know the toll that battle brings, of resolute intention
To carry on, day by day, for all you loved and hoped for
To live in peace a happy life, away from bloody war

For far too many, no long life ahead, free of struggle and pain and the gun
And we must remember the price that was paid, by each and every one
Regardless of views, opinions aside, no matter how each of us sees it
They were there and I cannot forget, even though I did not live it

I do not know your name, but I know you died
I do not know from where you came, but I know you died.

Lest We Forget.

Trying to control that place is like trying to plait sawdust. The justification for the British presence is that it'll stop attacks on mainland Britain. I dont think anyone's buying that.

if we werent there the terorist attacks would be here...

The average British soldier is 19 years old….
He is a short haired, well-built lad who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears and just old enough to buy a round of drinks but old enough to die for his country – and for you.

He’s not particularly keen on hard work but he’d rather be grafting in Afghanistan than unemployed in the UK. He recently left comprehensive school where he was probably an average student, played some form of sport, drove a ten year old rust bucket, and knew a girl that either broke up with him when he left, or swore to be waiting when he returns home. He moves easily to rock and roll or hip-hop or to the rattle of a 7.62mm machine gun.

He is about a stone lighter than when he left home because he is working or fighting from dawn to dusk and well beyond. He has trouble spelling, so letter writing is a pain for him, but he can strip a rifle in 25 seconds and reassemble it in the dark. He can recite every detail of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either effectively if he has to. He digs trenches and latrines without the aid of machines and can apply first aid like a professional paramedic. He can march until he is told to stop, or stay dead still until he is told to move.

He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation but he is not without a rebellious spirit or a sense of personal dignity. He is confidently self-sufficient. He has two sets of uniform with him: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his water bottle full and his feet dry. He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never forgets to clean his rifle. He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes and fix his own hurts. If you are thirsty, he'll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food is your food. He'll even share his life-saving ammunition with you in the heat of a firefight if you run low.

He has learned to use his hands like weapons and regards his weapon as an extension of his own hands. He can save your life or he can take it, because that is his job - it's what a soldier does. He often works twice as long and hard as a civilian, draws half the pay and has nowhere to spend it, and can still find ironic humour in it all.

He has seen more suffering and death than he should have in his short lifetime. He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and he is unashamed to show it or admit it. He feels every bugle note of the 'Last Post' vibrate through his body while standing rigidly to attention. He's not afraid to 'Bollock' anyone who shows disrespect when the Regimental Colours are on display or the National Anthem is played; yet he would defend anyone's right to be an individual.

Just as with generations of young people before him, he is paying the price for our freedom. Clean shaven and baby faced he may be, but be prepared to defend yourself if you treat him like a kid.

He is the latest in a long thin line of British Fighting Men that have kept this country free for hundreds of years. He asks for nothing from us except our respect, friendship and understanding. We may not like what he does, but sometimes he doesn't like it either - he just has it to do. Remember him always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood.

Condolensces on the loss of your brother.

It barely even makes the news in the US anymore which is truly sad. I was lost on the purpose of going into Iraq in the first place and the Afghanistan quagmire is even more silly.

It may not be Vietnam in scale but in length of time, silly waste and no perceptible end in sight....you think we'd have learned our lesson either the first time or by watching the Russians in the early 80's.

Bring them all back home....today.

bring them home? and betray the lives of all those who died for you and me,
bring them home and the sacrafice of their lives will be worthless and pointless

Why are we still shocked at this?

The army was created to defend against and to attack other armies. They use guns, bombs and other such destructive devices. The risk is there, I made a simple choice in life. Do I want to put my life in the hands of people who are not prepared to take the same risks themselves? No, are you mad? I don't want to die for a pointless conflict which has nothing to do with us whatsoever.

I know all about the American theory of "Those who have the ability to do something about a situation, have the responsibility". Fair enough, but what are the Americans and the British defending? As far as I am aware we are not getting bombed so get the **** out and leave them to sort their own [Poor language removed] out.

Their deaths WERE pointless, killing other kids for no reason doesn't ******* justify the deaths of other kids. Pointless death to make you feel better? No thanks.

And stop comparing Afghanistan to WW2 Dan for heaven's sake. Stopping Hitler is not ******* analagous to staying in Afghanistan When there's NO REASON TO BE THERE

Hardly the same threat though, Danny, to be fair. 1939: do **** all = get invaded by a murderous superpower; 2009: do **** all = err...not quite sure.

"Its not our war" - the same was said in the years leading up to WW2.

There isn't a threat?...
