His Dad wanted him to play for Scotland. He knew the fuss it would cause if he chose Ireland.
He plays for Ireland because he wasn't allowed to play for Scottish youth teams because of a stupid rule that the SFA had over schoolboy football. Aiden was invited to play for Ireland at youth level as they had no such rule, and was never going to go back after that. That's it in black and white. Any one else saying otherwise is talking crap.
Don't even get me started on why McCarthy doesn't play for us.
Cracking goals from Aiden tonight. Really hoping he's going to showcase his talents in an Everton shirt this year. As i've said many times, on his day he can be world class. Martinez has just somehow got to get some consistency from him.
Any vids/gifs of the goals?
you obviously don't work in the Scottish setup then. Both players would walk in to the Scotland team.

from 15-18 McCarthy was told on numerous occasions he wasn't and would never be good enough for Scotland and that there were much better players in the Celtic/Rangers youth teams. This was despite him playing first team football in the SPL and being young footballer of the year.
go figure.
The Republic wanted him from Day one so he went with the Irish half of his family.
Was Vogts not manager then? the bloke that called Peter Canero, Gary Holt, Kevin Kyle and Alan Combe.
Figures.
perhaps in the early days but certainly McLeish and Burley said he wasn't good enough, Levein wanted him I think but was too frightened of a rejection after the Scottish U-turn ask. He was fast tracked into the Republic team at that point so that was any possibility of making him have to choose gone. He never had the chance to reject Scotland.
Most of it was that the was at an 'unfashionable' club at Hamilton, until very recently when Rangers went bust (and the new club started at the bottom of the Third) there's always been a big bias in selection. Talent had very little to do with it.That makes me sad. The boy was always destined to be a Premiership player.
