Gutted my son had a slight knock & without seeing it the insurance have wroth the car off it would cost 9 grand to replace it - not another mark on my car other than the bags breaking the windscreen - not much damage on the other car either .... read they can go off in 12 miles collision ....... or even if you bump the kerb hard ....? is this the norm ?

How old is the car mate?

I do wonder if they think it'll save them cash paying you 'market value' if the repair cost is high.

Have you asked for a breakdown of the repair / damage / costs? It sounds like the car is fine cosmetically, so it can only be some other damage. Or do airbag systems just cost a lot?
They quote 4 grand - which I have researched & is bull...... to purchase a similar car it will cost me 9 grand - as petrol car prices have rocketed as for reports everywhere at the weekend is shut .... car wise repair body shop wise .....

Insurance company have probably looked at what they view the market value of that model as and the cost of replacing airbags which can be very expensive. Difficult to say without knowing what the insurance company says the value of the car is - how much it costs to replace will likely be irrelevant.

I'd think a car that has had the airbags go off would lose a chunk of value - repaired or not.

They can be replaced & the ECU updated - I have had different views on pricing online ......

Which airbag(s)? I always thought it was deemed a write off if they all go not just the steering wheel. But if they all went it's more than a slight bump.
The is not a mark on our car & the other car is minimal damage - I read if you bump a kerb hard they can go off at 12mph ....

They can definitely be replaced but from the insurance companies point of view there's likely to be other damage from a crash that has deployed the airbags. Dashboard replacement could likely be needed, new windscreen as you say and they'd err on the cautious side if they've not had it checked over professionally - structural damage isn't always clearly visible.

Pain in the backside being the weekend but I'd have it properly looked at before setting a price in your head of how much you think it should cost. Cars that have had an airbag deployment are of no interest to a lot of buyers so market value is affected even with the best repair.

But again, the insurance company will have a set market value for your car and aren't going to bend over backwards looking for the best value repair out there. They'll likely not budge on that regardless of how much it would cost you to replace the car or whatever value you declared for your policy. It's a racket.

Its indicative of a materially wasteful society where bean counters are irreproachable lords to the great god of profit. Money will make humans extinct.
The insurance want their repair centre to do any work or if Ok demand a 2nd opinion - I lose my curtosy car plus have to pay £200...... extortion Zi have lodged a complaint as the government only two years ago outlawed this practice.....
