Was it a race?
He was number one - the true first millionaire horticulturist his ITV avert feeding a well known Lager on dead looking Tomatoes flopping to the floor - Percy Thrower watered them with the branded lager reaching other parts other lagers could not reach - miraculously sprung up with loads of jucy tomatoes on. them!
Before that he was the first Gardners World presenter - part time contract with BBC 2 while keeping hus position as Parks Superintendent of Shrewsbury - I never rated him much either tbh - best imo were a yorkshire man Groffery Smith & Geoff Hamilton - the rest bog average- I have worked with better tbh !

Clearly the number 1 guy in England for horticultural knowledge. Closely followed by Charlie Dimmock.
No, he gave Gardening a bad image scruffy get - plus his name Percy Throwup - always needed an expert with him on a subject on Gardener World - I refused to go on with him - the worst one ever on Gardner's world & complaints poured in about the useless lump, he was sacked he was a young lad back then - who was Jersey parks Superintendent a total Bookworm - wow he was dreadful - he is a radio host in general now on a southern local BBC show & they drag him out occasionally for the Chelsea show & a few Gardner's world programmes in someone's fantastic garden - he really was a charlaton of a Horticulturist - if he had been in my nursery I would have sacked him !

He was sacked by millions telephoning in complaining - he was practically useless - hence Monty Don who had a stroke & when recovered then instantly returned .... as the programme was taken off-air he was that bad he made Blue Peter Gardening look good ......

Here he is -

Toby Neale Buckland (born 11 October 1969) is an English gardener, TV presenter and author, best known for being the main presenter from 2008 to 2010 of BBC's long-running flagship gardening programme Gardeners' World - sacked after two years with a new built set up in Birmingham costing millions all fenced off ... typical BBC ...I used to shout at my TV in disbelief - My son used to laugh & ask what was he doing wrong - everything I replied - I never wrote in to complain - no need millions did - a total bookworm .....

Millions of people actually rang in complaints about a gardening presenter? The show must have had terrific ratings if literally millions were watching it to start with.

It does In my nursery I ran after Friday the plants they were discussing were asked for that weekend & on the Monday - punters were after that plant - often the answer was no as the plant was an acid loving soil plant & the area they lived in was a lime stone area .... - a very popular programme he was not sacked instantly - it was a build up of complaints -

I had an Aberdeen University student with free wages with a degree in Horticulture, I sacked him in 2 weeks - a useless bookworm ... I could not trust him to sweep the green house floor & his plant knowledge was negligible on plants & growing .... Free wages or not he was a total a liability to me & my team .....

He complained to my top Parks Manager & I showed him a list of his errors so he backed me - His mother sent me a very nasty letter which I just put in the wastepaper bin ....
