Interesting thst he's only had a few days since returning of working with the team really, now if the coaching can get that level of performance from him on a even semi regular basis, we've got a player there
The thing for me is that successive managers have said he trains well. I dont think its lack of effort with Iwobi. Theres a question of intensity to me, but also hugely one of confidence.
I know footballers are very fortunate, but it's not easy to just translate everything, into a 90 minute section of play, in front of 40k people once a week. It's not automatic everyone can do that, and everyone can do it at a young age.
To me, he screams of a footballer who probably needed more help to get the training pitch form onto the match stage. Its early days, but hopefully Lampards approach, which seems more supportive and training focussed will help.
I said last week, Iwobi could really suit what Lampard wants. Players who get into half spaces in wide areas, who can carry the ball and also look to thread through balls for a centre forward. He has those skills. Hes not a guy who is going to go wide and get crosses but Lampards approach could work for him.
Hes 25. Not old by any stretch. Look at how Gray was written off before he came here. Theres not a chance 12 months ago most people would have had Gray as a good option. But sometimes players get to an age and maturity when it clicks for them. It has got Gray and I hope it can for Iwobi.
Over and above the tactical things, what I noticed today was he put his body on the line all game. That's what DCL and Richarlison do every week. That is the big difference thus far between the 3 players. I dont think they are miles ahead of him, but even when they are hot playing well (DCL didnt today) he leaves it all on the pitch.
The crowd noticed too, and really roared him on. So you kind of hope the pennies dropped. I think hes had a bit of a harsh time since he arrived, but I really hope he can build on today. It was fantastic to see him just shrugging players off and sprinting past them today. That's all people will ask every week.
