Happy 79th birthday to Alex Young today.

Curious to know if any posters on here got to see him play. I've read about him and he sounds way way ahead of his time. Would love to hear stories about him.

I did and short version yes he was good, very, very good... though he was the first to admit he could have his off days.
plenty out there to look at Ijjy
somebody will no doubt write a better in all ways description than my meagre efforts

I personally never saw TGV play live, only on TV, but my older brother still goes misty-eyed whenever his name is mentioned.
Have to admit to meeting the great man at Goodison a couple of years ago and I genuinely felt I was in the presence of 'greatness' and he was so humble as to be inspiring.
Many Happy Returns and many more of 'em too !!

Absolutely idolised him,we used to shout "show him the ball Alex" before he skinned someone him and Royston (Vernon) had such a great understanding, and the question to your mate on the way to match was "how many today then ?" Yes a great player and aptly named The Golden Vision, have tears in my eyes here.

Alex & Roy Vernon were my first footy heroes .. they still are!! Perhaps the most important moment in our history in the early 60's was when Alex leaped majestically to head the winner against Spurs in the Street End net, psychologically doing the business against the team vying for the league and effectively steering us to be the League Champions in 1962/3. An iconic moment!!!
