A great player who on his day was as good as most players I have seen, but that is the key," ON HIS DAY", Alex had a God given talent that enchanted you made you wish for his good games to never end, unfortunately Alex had plenty of bad games when he just couldn't get into the game.

When he was at Hearts he was well known and Real Madrid, best team in the world at that time, came to assess him, after a few games watching him, they decided against signing him. He didn't get many Scottish caps, although being an Anglo
Scot was one of the reasons for this. All in all loved watching him, but rated Vernon, Collins, Ball, Kay and Rooney better than him because they were more consistent, but that is just my opinion and can understand if people don't agree with me
because I know how much Alex was adored, idolised and worshipped by the Goodison Hordes.

I have heard from my Dad hundreds of times that Alex Young was the best he had ever seen in the blue jersey. I remember Alex coming back to Goodison about 15 years ago, Alex came over and signed a book that I had with me, my Dad cried as it was the first time he had met his hero. My Dad said getting his autograph and meeting him was literally a life long dream come true.

And all of that merely enhances his legendary status, the fact that a player who couldn't make his God given talents appear game in, game out yet nearly fifty years on, grown men still idolise and fantasise about the occasions when he floated and glided around the Grand Old Lady. Every time they show that third goal against Manure on the big screen, when he jinks past Nobby Stiles and rips his shot into the Park End goal, it raises the hair on the back of my neck. Once seen, never forgotten.

Alex Young and Alan Ball are the two finest players I have ever seen playing in a blue shirt. Alex well deserved his nickname....
My late father used to say the same, both he said were worshipped by the crowd. However he still maintained ball in his prime to be the best Everton player he had ever seen. Ball had everything, tireless work ethic, inspirational and fantastic footballer. Young was such a graceful player on his day my dad said, he was an absolute joy to watch. Although ball was the more consistent player.

Amazed when my lads mate said "my mums uncle was a footballer, I think he might have played for Everton."

Instant phone call.. "yeah I think he did his name's Alex"....butted in "Young ?" .... "yeah, have you heard of him ?"

She was amazed when I told her about his nickname and legendary status and the film, she said he was very reserved and never talked about it ... would've been just after he'd retired when she was a kid, due to her parents splitting up she never really saw that side of her family much after being a young kid but said he was her fav uncle, her lad is called Alex... can't kick a ball to save his life. Blown away when I showed her the start of the film with her cousin on & when my lad showed her a pic of the entrance with Alex young Suite above the door.
