Man United Rooney was better than Rush. However Kanchelskis was no Dalglish.

But you know the rs player that never seems to get any love in these polls even by the rs themselves? It's that one with 2 ballon d'ors - I know he didn't get them at Lidderpewl but Keegan is right up there with the best.
Keegan was a cracking player but didn't have the skill level of Dalglish.

I think Keegan was one of those players who was ahead of his time. Strength & fitness wasn't as prominent in the game as it is now when he was around, but what he lacked in skill he made up with effort & endeavour. He was generally a lot fitter & stronger than most of those who played against him & that's what made him stand out. If he was making his way in the game nowdays I doubt he'd be anything special. I remember Johnny Giles (Leeds Utd) decking him with a right hook right in front of the ref in a Charity Shield match at Wembley back in the 70's. That would probably lead to a 3 month ban in today's game but Giles just received a yellow card :D

Combined XIs have a few distinct problems.

1. They're a collection of players from different teams and eras so would likely be a complete mess on the pitch.
2. They're fraught with fan bias.
3. With only 11 spots to fill, you're likely to leave out about 100 excellent footballers who would very easily put together a combined XI that would thrash your own XI..
4. Debate and discussion is dominated by fellas claiming players from days gone by are far better than modern players just because they say so. Usually unprovable and usually steeped in nostalgia.

Apart from that, great exercise...

RS when they were good didn't really have outstanding players ISTM - it was more a team effort of attritional anti-football and v high workrate. The backpass rule was instigated in part as a response to the RS trying to kill football as a spectator sport. So stands to reason you wouldn't see many of their players in a combined eleven.

If you remember Beardsley and Barnes playing for them it was a bit of a watershed as I'd never known them to play exciting football before - Barnes was a bit of a fraud but Beardsley has to make an alltime XI and not just because he played for us. World class player.

Right back seems like the Everton position where there isn't really a consensus pick. Think you need to be quite old to say you've seen a world class right back in the Royal Blue Jersey - I don't know who that might be but seen Alex Parker mentioned on here a few times. Late 50s early 60s.

I'm not suggesting they could play as a team. It's basically saying who was the best goalkeeper ever to play for Everton or Liverpool (That one's easy, obviously), who's the best right back etc.

Tried doing it in my head but I'd be lying if I had more Blues than reds in it so I'm going to abstain.

I assume the Kanchelskis is better than Dalglish comment was a joke.
