I loved watching Di Canio.

Wore his heart on his sleeve. Gave me the impression he was like a fan living out his dream.

What he did when Gerrard was injured was class, how many other players would have done that.

Alfred Di Stefano must be a contender - afterall he scored 7 goal in 5 European Cup finals for Real Madrid

Van Basten, Maradona, Zidane, Klinsmann....So many players to choose from, all of them genuinely world class, however for me one player stands head and shoulders above them all.

Paolo Maldini.

Being a defender, he never seems to be one of the first names which spring to mind, but if I was choosing an all time 11, he would be the first name on my teamsheet

Very tough call, but unfortunately I remember Baresi's last couple of years where he just ended up a cynical player who would constantly foul the opposition, pull their shirts etc. For me that takes the shine off him a bit.
If he had retired a couple of years earlier, I think I would probably have him ahead of Maldini

In their respective peaks, Baresi was a more exciting player to watch, and probably did more for the team as a leader. But the sheer length of Maldini's career, at the level he has maintained, probably evens it out. Too close to call for me.

I think Maldini at his peak was incredibly exciting because he could basically do everything. As an attacking left back he would regularly charge forward, beat a few players before slotting in the shot. He could cross well, he was strong in the air, obviously without peer defensively and was comfortable with both feet. Have a look at some YouTube compilations (such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3WeVch62t4). If you were building the perfect defender then he'd be it.

To add to all of that he's been an admirable sportsman as well and model professional. Baresi was a great defender, Maldini was a great footballer.

well, italian football is tainted, for how long has their game been corrupt, and how far does the stench go with regards those involved.

quite simply, it couldnt just be a couple of board members and a referee.

shame that the dishonest scum have ruined the reputations of the honest sportsmen there.
