Player Valuation: £100m
Rafael Benitez has reiterated his belief that Liverpool would already have won the Premier League this season were it not for the injuries of dynamic duo Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.
The second-placed Reds remain in the hunt, but fierce rivals Manchester United moved to within one point of a third successive top-flight title on Wednesday night as they came from behind to win 2-1 at Wigan.

And Benitez confesses that his side have suffered from the injury-enforced absences of inspirational captain Gerrard and star striker Torres, whose productive attacking partnership has been restrained by a number of complaints.

"You cannot imagine if Gerrard and Torres had been fit all season where we would be now so it has been a good season but you know it could be better," the Liverpool boss told the club's official website.

Fergie was right the man just doesnt have any class how i will enjoy Sunday.

They lost the league at the turn of the year:
  • The A4 factoids Benitez blurted out about Ferguson and the chasing Sir Awex gave him after that
  • box head Gerrard's temporary incarceration taking their collective eye off the ball
  • selling a forward and not replacing him in January
Self inflicted wounds, and they let the sloppiest United campaign in recent seasons go by without capitalising on it. They'll have to wait the best part of a decade for another chance now, because the good news is that Rafael has his contract. (y)

he's right of course as they are they only 2 players in the whole of the premier league to have been injured, no other team has had an influential player missing for a game this season.
it's so unfair, maybe we should give them some points for games they missed, everyone will be treated equal though and if any others can give evidence (doctors note or note from mummy) then they will also be awarded some points, bit like the duckworth lewis method applied to football. of course nobody will claim any points because nobody has had any injuries.

unless of course there's anyone who has say......

played the majority of the season with no strikers
lost their main playmaker from the midfield
lost their player of the season, cup semi penalty hero.

the list goes on Franco, so shut your grid 'cos your bleating is even getting on the gobshoites nerves now as well, you're on skysports was full of your adoring public the other night, most seem to think you deserve a lengthy spanish holiday for your efforts.

2 players don’t make a team. Rooney's been out in chunks of the season either through injury or suspension. Ronaldo didn’t play for the 1st month of the season.

Blame his purchases perhaps? Robbie Keane has got to the be one of the biggest flops in RS history - £20million. Dossena is hated by all, £6million. Insua, average - £6million. George Lucas - hated by all. Ryan Babel has turned gash - £12million (?). Then there's back up such as El Zar and Ngog who are clearly not up to standard to say a United sub such as Anderson, Nani, Fletcher, Park, Berbatov, Tevez.

While I do admit (with disgust) the RS did have the better side and tactics than United this season, which was clear to see when they beat them (comfortably) and the others around them in the league. Their downfall is the team as a whole keeping the standard up and having the experience to carry throughout the entire season and cup games. United have been under-par this season but they have the experience of top flight pressure and have players that can change games in every department.

Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez, Berbatov, Carrick, Ferdinand, Vidic - have all pulled a game from the fire and won a match. The RS have Gerrard, Torres, Alonso….maybe Kuyt from time to time. So if 2 of those 4 aint playing, its going to be hard.

The RS have had more shots and hit the woodwork more times than any other club this season which says a lot. And what also says a lot is the for the 2nd or 3rd season running the same applies - they don’t lose many but they draw a lot.

Its about winning games. United have match winners and that's why they're gonna pick up the title again.

To be fair to "them", it has been a good campaign. But as usual, Benitez spoils that by coming out with a pathetic excuse.

Good post by KB above (y)

If English clubs didnt get banned from Europe, we would be the greatest team in the world, FACHHT.

Im not bitter tho, not at all, ive nearly forgot about to be honest, didnt like the 86 team and was happy when 1 of our greatest teams was broken up in the search of European Football.

******* fat racilist.

Don't know how yer can say that, Neb, what have they won/about to win, this season?....and with the money they've spent I'd be bloody well gutted if I was a Redshyte.

All I hear is they've laid the foundations for next season :D must have a lot of Brickies in their squad.

Chelsea and Arsenal have had indifferent seasons for different reasons which i think wont be the case next season. Chelsea havnt had consistencey behind the scenes, while Arsenal have had shocking injuries, i think its morea case of them being bad then the ****e good. i expect next year to be Mings last, but i hope not!

Posted via Mobile Device " we av injuries nho,....... we wud av won it nho.....next year nho.... " Face it pal you nho good enuf nho ... FACT!

I agree Neiler.

What I find amusing is that people have forgotten that Keane ever played for the RS. When was the last time a player moved for £20mill only to move back half a season later because he was pish poor? Unheard of.

Then the RS fans say he wasn’t a Ming buy. Ming wanted Barry, couldn’t get him (for less than Keane!) so settled on Keane instead because Rick Parry wanted him. Bull-****s I say.

Waiter Man makes some terrible buys. Out of the £200 or odd millon Mings spent, about 5 were worth while, 2 being world class….and that was only when the Yanks took over.

I remember it was 50-50 whether the fans wanted Ming to stay before he signed his contract, saying he's bought ****e, inherited Houliers squad blah blah blah. And they were right to be honest - they had like a 6-9 point lead and ballsed it up.

He then signed, beat Real and United - and all was forgiven…..So 2 games after how many years in charge and no title made him everyone's fav RS manager?

Points system is 'all wrong' says Benitez

Rafael Benitez has hit out at the points system in the league, claiming it favours teams "who are not managed by fat waiters with racialist tendencies, managers who can't beat mediocre teams at home and wear pubic wigs on their faces are unfairly penalised." He went on to simper.

"You cannot imagine where we would be if you were awarded 2 points for a draw, or even 3, then we would win the league for sure, as no other team is as good at drawing at home to lower table sides as we are at Anfield"

"Next season will definately be our year, I am going to spend all of the close season working on being better, thinking up better excuses as to why we finish the seaon potless, and why the only silverware I get to see is when my temping agency sends me out to do Silver Service jobs at the Adelphi."

Rafael Benitez is 7and a half, and deluded.

Of course if he concentrated on the positive and eliminated that mid-season blip against Fulham, Stoke, Hull they'd have been mighty close. They had a super start and a great finish but...

Still whilst he's accentuating the negative and moving on they will never progress that final step - long may it continue.. (y)

They pushed United all the way Dan, which is about as good as they've done in years. If they had turned 3 of those draws into wins, they would be on top. A good season for them, even though they've failed to win anything.

Benitez demands points theft be addressed

Rafael Benitez today hit out at smaller clubs that take points from his Liverpool side.

"It really isn't fair that we have teams like Stoke, for example, that aren't us good as us, stealing points from a team like Liverpool."

"I mean really, the FA ought to do something about it."

"We're better than all the teams in the PL, so by right we should be top."

"I'll be petitioning the FA as soon as I have spoken with the club's lawyers."

"All I know is, come the end of the season, there will be approximately 28 points missing and in the possession of small teams."

"These teams know who they are, and they now know that I know."
