American Football

Strangely, seeing as how I was moaning about the stop-start aspect of American Footy, I got hooked on baseball whilst in Canada. Probably helped that the first game I saw was in the Rogers Centre, which is pretty impressive in itself.

But the Blue Jays had a game every night we were in Canada and I managed to catch most of them in the hotels after going out for the night or having a meal or whatever. I loved it (y)

Yes. I am a hypocryt :P

I think the trick with American Football is to think of each "down" as a miniature game in itself. The attackers decide on a strategy, the defence tries to guess and adapt, then once the ball is downed, another mini game starts.

I can enjoy American Football now I think of it that way. Baseball however.... zzzzzzz

Yeah its totally like that... the commentators on the superbowl the other night kept talkin about the "chess game" tactics goin on... think of it as a real life game of chess with extra violence thrown in just for fun. I think a lot of american sports are about the strategy of repeated singular indivual match-ups within a team environment... imagine we were playing man utd and ronaldo was being marked by baines... it would be like them constanly givin ronaldo the ball to try and get past him and then givin it to giggs to get past hibbert, only sometimes theyd swap them over, or involve others players, or make you think they'll do one then do the other....

That's a good analogy.

The key term you hear so often in American sports, mainly in football and basketball is "match ups" and who's got to guard/be responsible for who.

Having dismissed American Football out of hand for many years, I did come to understand it a little more after reading 'Football for dummies'. It can be interesting, and is similar to cricket in some ways in terms of the tactics involving unexpected passes, runs etc, which you could compare to someone like Muralitharan bowling a Doosra.
I don't like baseball though

College football is great. Every game has some meaning and the crowds actually have some atomsphere. College football is the closest thing we got to football (soccer) here in the states. It has alot more plays than pro football and less TV timeouts.

Used to be a big NFL fan, I still like it, but once I started watching football (soccer) I can't watch a live NFL game anymore. There is a 3min TV timeout after about every 4th play. I have to Tivo them now and when you Fast Forward through the commericals you can watch a game in about 90min. If you FF between plays you can watch it in about 30min.

The Bills are going to play like 4 games/year in Toronto starting in 2008 or 2009 I think.

The best part about American football is when the entire pub gets transfixed on some inconcequential replay that is getting reviewed. It must be like seeing a bunch of people analyze some crime scene video or Zapruder film or something.
