We all have had awaydays that stand out for reasons beyond football one that springs to mind for me was Coventry away 19th August 1989.
We left Liverpool probably about 11 oclock 4 off us in a Jaguar that had seen better days,It was the first game of the season so you are full of hope and at the time we were still a reasonable team but definitely on a downward slope.
We made good time and arrived around Highfield Road about 2 but the day took a turn for the worse as the car broke down and we couldnt get a thing out of it ,it was completely bolloxed. We decided to go to the game and worry about the car afterwards.
The game itself was a typical let down and Coventry comfortably beat us 2-0.
After the game we headed back to the car with the hope that the car would have magically repaired itself ,no such luck.
We decided that there was only one course of action which was go to nearest pub to discuss our options we were still there 5 hours later as these things take time. We realised we needed either the AA or RAC or such like but as none of us were members this was a problem. One of the lads said his sister was in the AA but as she was not with us this really was not much help. We rang them anyway blagging that the sister was there so they said they would need her to sign the forms and produce paperwork when we got back to Liverpool.
As the Pub was busy we approached a few girls in the the pub and asked them to sign the paperwork and pretend to be our mates sister. We found a girl to do it so we just had to wait for our breakdown truck which picked up our car and let us sit in his cab.Luckily they were unable fix the car as none of us were in a fit state to drive it.
About half ten we were ready to go but by this time we were starving so asked the fella to stop at a chippy and an off licence as we needed some sustenance for the way home he duly obliged.
We got back to Liverpool about half one but the fella still needed to see some paperwork which was a problem as we never had any. We got him to park in a car park in town and done a runner. I did feel sorry for the driver but needs must what else could we do?
Anybody else got any strange awaydays?
