We had that - it did nothing.

We replaced with a custom question - any registration has to answer a rotating Everton themed question. After that an email verification link is required.

Short of interviewing new accounts, we can't do much more.

I trust you know more about your site than I do.

I think others will agree that it's been more prevalent in the last few weeks than, say, the last few months though.

Add to that limitations on posting (No Links prior 30 posts etc, No private messaging prior 30 posts, no signatures unless upgraded)

Bans for spam are consistent with traffic numbers. We'll keep an eye on it.
