The art of retaining the ball under pressure, turning players, then finding a pass is something not many midfielders have. The art of keeping possession when others flap and concede it. The art of keeping us on the front foot.
We certainly don’t have another midfielder capable of those things. Tacklers, assisters, scorers - quite possibly. But not the attributes in my first paragraph.
Anyone who questions whether he’d be a regular starter for us needs a check up from the neck up.
He'd get in the Liverpool midfield imo. Henderson & Milner nothing special . Keita for 50mil was hardly fantastic. And I even think wyjanldum is overrated. Then again all Liverpool players are overrated.I know we have a tendency to overrate players, but he'd get into all of the top six sides' midfielders apart from City and Liverpool, imo.
It's not just that he's better than what they have, it's that he offers different to what they have.
Spurs have the best midfield out of the 4 so don't HAVE to spend big on that area (plus, they need the wages and fee elsewhere).

With the tedious links to mbappe, I seen a Liverpool journalist asking the question, who of the front 3 do you leave out and he wasn’t sure he’d be a starter.
Liverpool basically have have a great defence, with fantastic full backs and a excellent front 3. Their midfield is the weakest part of their team.
I get your point. The reason I didn't include Liverpool is that while none of their midfielders have the ability on the ball that Gomes does, they do all work brilliantly in that Klopp system and that can't be denied.
You might say Wijnaldum is overrated, but look at the crucial goals he's scored for them, and he can play anywhere in that three, either holding, box-to-box or the furthest forward.
So yes, while a lot of Liverpool's play skips out their midfield and on the face of it I'd say Gomes is better, I can't reasonably say that he'd get into their side, because of how they play.

But I would say it’s no coincidence that while city & Liverpool both have great defences and the best defensive records. A lot of that is the fear opposing teams have of them and are reluctant to attack and over commit.
I think I could play defensive midfield fir them. I’m not so sure wijnaldum could play the holding role for us.
I think Gomes would suit a 433 with a natural number 6 and him playing either side. I’ve heard people mention Dembele(spurs) and that’s who I thought about when he first started to hit form for us. Dembele struggled at spurs in his first year or two, signed at a similar age and once he found his feet he was a beast for 3/4 years. And he starts weren’t great in terms of goals and assists, but he just bosses the middle of the pitch.
2 days of medical and 1 day of a cameraman sprinting round FF with a go-pro on his head for the announcement vid, then we’re onto the weekend where transfers are completely against the lawAbsolute bargain at the rumoured £22m. He’s boss and keeping him was so important.
Assuming we get it wrapped up this week as reported, it’s nice to get such a key signing in early on.
