I think it's an increasing thing these days sadly. The demands involved with being a modern day pro just are not for everyone it seems, you notice quite a few players these days who just don't seem interested (and that applies in many of the leagues) despite the rewards.
I'm not saying it's so in this particular case, but when you're comfortably set up for life financially, it could be hard for some players to motivate themselves, especially if they have no regional or local ties to their team.

Oh I agree, if you are unmarried, and in the PL or one of the other big leagues it really would only take a few years on sensible living and by mid 20's you could easily have enough to pack up. Example, was talking to another poster about the Vardy thing the other day, and considering he didn't really start playing properly till the age of 25/26 (I think it was) and he is what 34 now, he is reckoned to worth £14-15m which considering he has never played at a big club and only really been a pro for about 10 years it's easy to see why.

Our fault I guess for offering him an insane contract but I never fully understand why a talented guy would waste two of the few remaining years of his career twiddling his thumbs in a foreign city rather than sacrifice a couple of million in wages and go play some footy somewhere else.
