Should probably start in a midfield three for the time being. Obviously we badly need recruits here (that are preferably not Longstaff) but he, Doucoure and Allan all look better when they have an extra body to cover. DCL, Richy, Gray with Gordon and Townsend supporting is good for the time being. Then once we have better options at CM, we can think about a two man midfield for some games when an extra attacker is needed. And we can finally wave Gomes goodbye so he can’t tease us anymore.

Thought he played really well tonight, shame it was against opposition you would expect him to excel against. Distribution with both feet and ability to retain the ball under pressure was impressive, just a shame he seems unable to replicate that in the Prem with any consistency.
Looked like the loanee we were desperate to sign tonight.

I must have been watching a different game. He played decently without really excelling, I thought. At no point did I think we were massively controlling things calmly bar a short period in the middle of the game. He also was culpable of some awfully lazy challenges and positioning (though was by no means alone in that).

If we had a team full of runners you’d see a different player. He’d have time on the ball to make things happen. As it is, we have a manager who sets up in such a way it means he spends most of his time running about and not being effective at all.

True enough. He is without doubt nowhere near the same player he was a few years ago pre injury, but I agree the way we play is exposing him even more. Which, again, is on the manager.

When he signed on loan he was exceptional in the main. He signed and dropped a level and then the injury really set him back. He’s still a good player though IMO and just doesn’t get utilised (not just on the current manager either) when he’s playing well he’s a good member of the squad.

The difference between his top level and his ice ant be bothered level are massive. That game sums him up, about 20 mins when he just ran the show and bust a gut to get on the end of that header. The rest of the time just let the game pass him by in a haze.

Playing better since has had the new hair cut
