My heart drops at every such story................pointless saying any more as no one listens

How long before America contemplates not selling guns in Wal-Mart?

Bingo. Guns in the hands of humans kill people, why make them legal. They are an instrument of war.

The wild west died a long time ago. Time for America as a nation to 'wake up and smell the coffee' regarding gun law.

That Sheriff said it best "we can't prevent this type of attrocity from happenening". He is right. If guns were never legalised though, I'm sure the incidents would be few and far between, not as regular as the 9 o'clock news.

Desensitization I believe the word is, for every non-American at least. Fix the problems with the American laws or the rest of the worlds sympathy just ebbs away faster and faster each time to eventually it will be non-existent.

Sorry if that is a bit close to the bone, but it is my perception of the issue as a whole. I feel for the people that lost loved ones but I can't understand why Bush doesn't do something about it.

These unnecessary events are occurring with more and more regularity, yet if you brought an amendment before the American people or Congress to ban the ownership and sales of guns, it wouldn't stand a chance in hell. It's only a matter of time until the NRA once again comments on this incident with some derivative of "Guns don't kill people, people kill people"...especially with reports the gunman was off his medication. What a country, it's challenging to get a high level job with education, but if you try to get an education you have a chance of getting gunned down in a random act of violence. The media will talk about this for weeks, vigils will be held, the killers name will be everywhere, cable news networks will have documentaries about the "mind of the killer" and somewhere in America another person will watch the "fame" gained by the gunman and decide that looks like a good way to get attention. It's disgusting.

Wow Prawn, you would have had a field day in our last discussion on GOT concerning the 2nd Amendment here in the USA. It was spirited to say the least.

Well, I'm certainly not attempting to restart that debate but I will chime in quickly with two points about the 2nd amendment. First, in my opinion, the wording of the amendment is clearly not applicable in our modern world as it refers to bearing arms in relation to service in a militia. Two, there are plenty of responsible gun owners in the country and while I don't feel they should be punished for the actions of others, clearly something has to be done.

On March 18th, 2008, the US Supreme Court will hear the case, District of Columbia v. Heller. In a nutshell, the District of Columbia Federal Court of Appeals became the first court to strike down a firearm ban for reasons based on the 2nd amendment. They were the second court to interpret the 2nd Amendment explicitly as protecting an individual right to firearms for private use. United States v. Emerson 5th Cir. (2001) was the first case this occurred in. This isn't the first time the Supreme Court has touched on the issue of the 2nd amendment and given precedent and the conservative makeup of the court, I would be shocked if the decision was not upheld and the current interpretation of the 2nd amendment remains.

I think at the conclusion (i.e. when we got tired of arguing about it) of our debate, the general consensus, no matter which side someone fell, was that a change was needed.

I think most everyone recognized that "how to implement the change" was the big sticking point and that there really wasn't any easy solution.
