2022/23 Anthony Gordon

Wolves rejected £35m from Forest for Gibbs White.

Leicester wanting £80m+ for Fofana.

It's a mad market - we need to be looking for a fair bit more than £40m for Gordon.
Wolves don't have the same financial need to sell as us and Leicester (that I know of) and Leicester are playing a very silly game with Fofana.

It makes sense not to accept the first offer because that, annoyingly, is just how transfer negotiations work but I really fear us getting too big for our boots and Chelsea walking away. I would bet a great deal that, if he stays with us, he declines to the extent he'll be on loan in the Championship in a year or two, and leaving for free at the end of his contract. If Chelsea come back with a bid closer to £50m I really, really hope we take it.

We knocked them back??? For that fee!!

Jesus, I’m going to have a panic attack.

Yes, the lad tries hard, no doubt… but I honestly feel that’s about it… he runs a lot and throws himself into tackles (often a millimeter away from getting himself sent off).

Don’t get me wrong, I’d never fault his effort but he’s not anything special!!

And his feigning injury crap is wearing thin now (though for Chelsea the refs will buy a lot of it happily giving free kicks and penalties)

Yes he’s come through our ranks but the ‘one of our own’ shouts look daft after the phone me / come get me celebration. I’d understand a bit more if it was 2 / 3 years down the line but not already!!

Knocked them back….I need a paper bag I’m hyperventilating.

Alright settle down. All this for not selling a player.

I never want to lose our own youth players that have talent and potential. However if this is the only way we can finance 2 or 3 new attacking players then we have to do it. Currently this feels like it could become a repeat of last season's horror show.
Wasn’t that the reason for selling Richarlison though, I still wouldn’t be confident we would end up with any decent strikers, even after selling Gordon.

I don't know, I agree £50m would be a fair price, and one we might have no option but to accept.

But what I read looked like spin to me. We had sources close to the club yesterday adamant no bid was made, Jim White, Myers etc. It's all a bit bizarre to me.

If we get our valuation of £50m then fine, sell him. But if we don't then keep him. No need for any spin, let Chelsea decide if they want to pay the sort of fee that makes our mind up for us.
Think you’re missing my argument. The fact that there’s absolutely no need for spin lessens the reason to believe that what we’re hearing IS spin.

£50m isn’t just a fair price, it’s a VERY good one.

Would you be happy if we spent £50m on Anthony Gordon? As much as I like him, I’d be saying we overpaid by about £20-£25m

At worst he is going to be a solid PL player, who will be useful in a squad. He's never ever going out on loan in the championship, so that's nonsense.

I wouldn't be happy if we spent 50m on anyone because we have limited funds and can't afford to get deals like that wrong.

But you can't compare us to Chelsea as we don't live in the same financial world. The rules are skewed hugely in favour of the big clubs so that they can keep taking punts and throwing darts at the wall. If they get one wrong (or 2 or three like Kepa, Werner, Lukaku - all huge losses), then it's no issue, and they can keep chucking more darts at 50 or 60m a pop.

We cannot afford to get high value deals wrong so need to be very careful about what deals we make. If we get a 40 or 50m deal wrong then we can't spend that amount of money again to rectify it.

I know this is going to attract ire but he is super overrated ,Harvey barnes at Leicester is a far better player so is connor Gallagher I'd even take a straight swap for him. Everton fans work in extremes either over hype players or over scrutinize players. Gordon has promise for sure but theres a chance he could be the next Aaron lennon. Gordon has absolutely no end product and he loses the ball constantly due to iffy decision making. If we can get 45 or more we should take it immediately.

There is no amount of money that we could have which would make me think Anthony Gordon at £50m+ was money wisely spent.

Yes, that's fair.

But there are different scenarios here. Chelsea have huge amounts of money so can afford to overpay, whereas we really can't. The value of players like Gordon to the selling team will always massively exceed their true market value. But clubs like Chelsea get the players in the door because they bid that bit extra. So we are absolutely right to value him extremely highly, considering the buyer is Chelsea, and considering it is 16th August, with window shutting in 15 days.
