I feel very sorry for the lad at this point. The pressure he's now under is enormous as fans will now demand £50m level performances from him when in reality he's nowhere near ready or capable to produce such performances.
The thing is, if we were a well run club I don't even think he'd be a starter for us, or at least one that has become an enormous part of the team. We haven't been able to bring him through gradually and allow him to develop at a natural pace - we expect far too much from him and giving the number 10 shirt and effectively make him 'undropable' I think has been too hasty from the manager.
We have to remove sentimentality and just look at this from a purely business point of view. We are in no position on or off the field to turn away such top dollar for a player who shouldn't even be expected to hit double figures for goal involvements in a season. I don't think he's ever scored for us with a non-deflected goal, his numbers aren't great and they're probably higher than they otherwise would be if he didn't get lucky on occasion.
I hope we haven't scared Chelsea away, but what I can see them doing now is testing our resolve on deadline day which would put us right up against it. We would probably be forced at that point to turn them away again simply because we wouldn't have enough time to get replacements in, which is why I think rejecting the second bid out of hand and not leave a carrot dangling for them was a big mistake.

Diving is part of the game and will be until referees stop giving soft fouls and rewarding players for exaggerating contact.
Its part of the game because it gives cheating refs the chance to influence the game in the way they want it.
