2022/23 Anthony Gordon

Gordon is a young player who had a really good spell and expectations around him went through the roof.

He is going through a poor spell as young players do and he has to keep going and try to play himself back into form.

This happens to all young players.

….all youngsters have dips in form, I think that’s accepted. The debate for me is whether Gordon is going to be a top attacker or not. The top forwards tend to score or create goals others can’t. I don’t really see that with Gordon.

it’s not to say he won’t go on to be a top player but I’d have certainly cashed in on him whilst his stock was high, especially as the forward line needed immediate strengthening. At best Gordon will be good in the long-term but i’m not sure we can afford to wait.

Genuine question: In your opinion, when was his "really good spell"?

That challenge was ten a penny a few years ago. Joe Parkinson did 4 or 5 of them a game. People dont half go over the top. It was a firm tackle.

As indicated, if Mitrovic and VVD arent reds, that is not a red. It would have been nice to see if someone else might have put a tackle in last night. Give me a committed player, over one who shirks tackles any day.
He’d of gone if VAR was in use, have no doubt about it.
While I agree those type of tackles used to be more frequent and barely raised an eyebrow, those days are gone.
As for VVD & Mitrovic, players will be sent off for less obvious reds this season with or without VAR, but that’s more an issue of consistency in Prem refereeing than justification for Gordon not seeing red imho.

these late challenges come from his frustration at being bullied on and off the ball and then flying back to put in a late challenges. He needs to bulk up more. He claimed last season he went through a programme for it. He is not showing the results more than a year later.

He is young though and hasn't had the years of experience davis and holgate have had. hopefully he will progress much better than they did.
