Rewarding mediocrity again.
Gordon is just the next Davies. Massively overhyped by our fans because he's local. Now he'll be rewarded with a 5 year contract and go on to become a bench player. We'll buy someone to replace him in the starting 11 and wont be able to shift him off the books at free ride FC because he will not have the value We'll ask other clubs to pay for.
Vault me.

Let's just let the contract run down of high ceiling young player then or weaken our position should he flourish and mean we wouldn't get the money we would if he was tied down to longer. He isn't being tied down because he's going to be a global superstar, he's being tied down because he has a high ceiling (whether he hits that ceiling isn't known to ANYONE) and could be a real asset to the club. What happens if he really starts to settle down and we haven't teid him down? There is uproar that he wasnt tied down and we've sold him for a pittance.

When Tom Davies broke through it was wise to tie him down long-term as he could have flourished, and we'd be protected. He won't be on massive wages, him running his contract down isn't a problem as he didnt cost anything in the first place. He isn't bleeding the bank dry.

It's different when we sign a player because he's cost a fee. Doucoure for example would have been a major problem if he was handed any longer than he was given. Gomes is an example of EXACTLY that problem.

He won't and we will kick ourselves for not selling him for a crazy fee he's not good enough and we have seen what his character is like after having his head turned by chelsea the one thing i liked about him last season was his attitude and workrate and both have been poor since the chelsea drama.
Seems to me you like the older players .....

My opinion is that we should have sold him in the summer. I would have taken anything approaching 30 million. You can justify it by "trying to tie down an asset" but by that logic we should give Gray and Townsend new deal. Should we look to extend Maupay and McNeil new long term deals next year. They all contribute just as much as Gordon.
I know people will disagree, but I think their stance is based on sentiment rather than his actual ability.

That goes against the whole logic I provided. Tieing a young, promising player who has the potential to hit a high ability ceiling, is different to extending the contracts of two older players who have either hit that ceiling, or falling back from that ceiling. The same goes with Mcneill and Maupay, neither are in the same circumstances to Anthony Gordon. You could argue it for McNeill too, but the judgement comes into play as to what is his ceiling is as he has plaeyd alot more senior football which is twice as many games as Gordon.

It doesn't mean Anthony Gordon will hit that ceiling, he may fall short, but it secures the club should he do well and big clubs come calling, we are in a position of strength.

If any new contract he signs doesn't have an iron-clad release clause set in it, AG really needs better represenatation. He clearly wanted the move in summer, almost certainly still does, so why would you complicate any future transfer by tying yourself up with a new contract on the club's terms? I suspect that is exactly what has help up "negotiations" from day one; AG knowing full well he's under no pressure whatsoever to sign anything that doesn't suit him.

Which is right but at the same time he also isnt the full package, so he gives himself security. I imagine there will be a release clause, which will be good enough for us but low enough for him to think its worth having.

Ultimately, he has to do it on the pitch if he wants to move to an elite club, simple as that. If he doesnt that release clasue becomes pointless, if he does, we're guaranteeing ourselfs a good fee (assuming its a good clause) and keeping us in a strong position to negotiate if they dont want to hit that say 50m release clause.

It's tying a young player down who has tonnes of potential, it is only a positive. If it was a 25 year old who was medocre, I'd get it.

I just don't see that high ceiling everyone else does. He has speed, but that won't last forever and all other areas of his game are weak to poor. Time will tell, and maybe I'll look foolish for my opinion, but I really don't think I will.

There is a high ceiling, alot of players at his stage (70-80 first team appearances) of his career do have it. Big question is whether he can fulfill it. No guarantees but he cost nothing so if he doesnt hit consistent high levels of performance then it's not hurt us really.
