Hello G.O.T. ers. Do any among us play the drums and would be willing to answer a few questions? My Nephew turns 9 in December and wants a Drum Kit but my Sister is having none of it! Apparently he found/swiped a drumstick from somewhere 6 months ago and has been tapping everything he sees since. He saw that Dave Grohl thing with a 1000 others and it inspired him so I want to help the lad out and I have had a bleeding Brilliant idea.

If noise is an issue get him an electronic drum kit so he can play with headphones on and not send the entire house mental. Also means you don't have to hear him being terrible at drumming for the first few months :p

My mate has this, it's good

May be a bit expensive though, especially if he wants a proper drum kit later. There are lots of cheaper alternatives but i can't vouch for their quality, best to check reviews.

My son was recently offered a one year drum lessons at a well regarded music school here in NYC (he doesn't play any instrument so it's not talent based, they're just trying to hook the kids so you keep them in classes for future years). They told us though that at the very least the first year is typically spent using only a single drum (snare), and often longer than that, so to not get into his head that he will be in the school of rock smashing sick solos any time soon. At home they practice with pillow pads on the drum, and don't invest in electronic kits unless you want to get a budget option or second hand

So I suppose I'd just say if your nephew just wants to mess around see if you can pick up something cheap first or maybe consider if something like the rock band video game is more up his alley before ponying up the dough

I don't play but have and it's incredibly hard (for me), four limbs doing four different things, but in time with each other is completely nuts and nigh on impossible. when done properly it is very impressive. There was a series on famous drummers on Sky arts I think, worth a watch.

Oh, and all drummers are always late, and always just a little bit mad.

So is it a secret?

I'm familiar with the theory that drummers tend to be a bit peculiar which is why I am encouraging my nephew because he is a bit soft in the head!

From you, Yes. Nothing personal.

Electric drum kits are great, and so much better for a house with space etc too. Easy to store too.

And you can obv make more sounds than just basic drum sounds, you can buy so many cool add ones too

It won't be long until someone in this thread tells everyone they're not real cos the Beatles didn't use one

I’m learning atm. One of my many mid-life crises.

I’ve got an electronic kit, also. Great, but probably not ideal for learners because you don’t get the same kind of physical feedback as from an acoustic kit.

You can get dampeners for acoustic sets if noise is an issue, or a drum pad if it’s space/affordability as well.

Perhaps consider bongos or a cajon or something as an alternative.

Just thinking about this post and a quick look at the Googles tells me Rick Allen, Def Leppard's drumist lost his arm at 21 in a car accident which makes his achievement all the more impressive and then there's the Motley Crews Tommy Lee Bass* at the other end of the spectrum!?

*I almost wrote Jones

They can produce a noise if beaten with sticks, problem solved 👊🏻
The cranky little buggers make a noise if the cat looks at them funny although I have no clue how that is possible!? I don't think that my Sister would approve because according to her they are 'precious'.
