Any Drumists among us?

I don't play but have and it's incredibly hard (for me), four limbs doing four different things, but in time with each other is completely nuts and nigh on impossible. when done properly it is very impressive. There was a series on famous drummers on Sky arts I think, worth a watch.

Oh, and all drummers are always late, and always just a little bit mad.
Just a little bit mad? They are out-and-out lunatics who inhabit a parallel universe. I know - I gigged with them from 1969 to last year! They get very upset when you say: 'What's a drummer? - someone who hangs around with musicians!'

Always fun to rib drummers a bit. One of my good mates was our drummer back when I was gigging.

Everyone in the band only referred to him as TD as a nickname for years, even though these aren’t his initials. The Drummer.

Hello G.O.T. ers. Do any among us play the drums and would be willing to answer a few questions? My Nephew turns 9 in December and wants a Drum Kit but my Sister is having none of it! Apparently he found/swiped a drumstick from somewhere 6 months ago and has been tapping everything he sees since. He saw that Dave Grohl thing with a 1000 others and it inspired him so I want to help the lad out and I have had a bleeding Brilliant idea.

Seen as he's only 9 and noise, space, expense being issues get him one of these:

This is an older model (Yamaha DD-55c...have it myself), but anything of this type from the Big 3 (Yamaha, Korg, Roland) will be fine. They're midi-compatible (you can connect external midi-instruments for more sound pallette), touch sensitive, work great with bogstandard drumsticks as well as hands/fingers, and the newer ones will have USB too (for direct PC-connection to sequencers, sounds etc).

So also quite future-proof. The 9-year old will however be happy with the decent onboard sounds for a good while yet. They've got internal speakers with volume control, and headphones option.

Around 200 of your nation's credits for new, or much cheaper if second-hand. Ebay has a few for around 50quid (assuming they work fine).

Drumists? You mean drummers?

Nope... https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Drumist

I originally planned on making something he count bang away at to his hearts content for 12 months but I might get something like the above.

Can drum kits go out of tune like stringed instruments do?

aye, just something cheap & simple (but still decent) for now. if he gets really into it then in a coupla years a proper drum kit.

The acoustic ones, yes. Or in Lars Ulrich's case they can go from in tune to out of tune:

The electronic drums (like Roland) are awesome, but they are expensive. I wouldn't splash for them for a 9yr old.

That said, many companies make practice pad-kits. They might be a cheaper option. There are also many smaller inexpensive "real" kits for kids but if sound is an issue, they won't work.

Don't spend too much as 9yr old "interests" are fleeting. Though promoting musical interest, even if it's just in-passing in kids is defo a good thing.

Is that you Ringo lol
Lennon when asked was Ringo the best drummer in the world- laughed & stated he was not the best drummer in the Beatles....
As at the time Paul McCartney was filling in the studio he played on back in the USSR.....
The WHO are on the BBC now & his son Zac is a million times better than his Dad ....

And yet he is one of the most famous drummers ever, I've heard conflicting stories. I saw his lad when he was playing for Oasis.
