No option makes sense for him. A straight option would mean if we went down but made other sales, we could forceably buy him to be our star in the Championship. Obviously he wouldn’t want that and ends up in dispute with Villarreal.

An option to buy with a clause saying void if we are relegated would be doable, but starts to become a bit pointless. Just get the loan done and get your boots on.

If he plays well enough to keep us up, he can go wherever he wants with a pat on the back. Nothing to be upset about here.

All the option to buy does is fix the price in. He could still turn down the move even if we activated the option to buy. Option to buys never ever suit the selling club, if he smashes it now and scores 10 goals from now to the end of the season they will probably demand £60m to buy him permanently, whereas with the option to buy at a fixed price of say £20m, that would be locked in regardless of performance. Having no option to buy only suits Villarreal really.

Not really.

It doesn't mean we can't go and buy him if he keeps us up.

We're not in a position to be getting spikey here over terms of a loan. He needs to come in and help keep us up. Deal with the rest later.

Much rather this than sign a crap striker for £27m
Exactly, I mean he could come in and totally bomb and we would be stuck with him then being forced to buy him at the end of the season on an already restricted budget. This way we can hedge our bets and see how it goes.

The issue of course is, he's not going to have any possible impact here for Lampard.

A loss today and he could well be taking training under Baines come Monday...

It would be an option not an obligation of course - basically just first refusal.

That would be an obligation to buy, not an option. Loan with an option is always the best. They don’t tend to happen anymore though because the selling clubs seem to have twigged that it doesn’t benefit them at all.
