The game was bypassing Neville, Cahill and Saha so you put players on that can replace them while keeping the same shape or add to it.

He took a striker off for a defender. For what reason?

The point was that a striker for striker would have made absolutely no difference. Having another body in midfield wouldn't hurt and would hopefully clog the lanes up a bit more.
